13:1 ¶
IN that day Jeshu went forth from the house and sat by the sea-side; |
|
13:1
And on that day Jesus went out of the house, and sat by the side of the sea. |
13:2
and great multitudes gathered near him, so that he went up and sat in a vessel; and all the multitude were standing on the shore of the sea. |
|
13:2
And great multitudes assembled around him; so that he embarked and seated himself in a ship, and all the multitude stood on the shore of the sea. |
13:3
And he discoursed largely to them in parables, and said: Behold, there went forth a sower to sow; |
|
13:3
An he discoursed with them much, by similitudes. And he said, Behold, a sower went forth to sow. |
13:4
and as he sowed, some fell by the road-side, and the fowl came and devoured it. |
|
13:4
And as he sowed, some [seed] fell upon the side of a path: and a bird came and devoured it. |
13:5
Another (portion) fell upon the rock, where there was not much soil; and immediately it sprung up, because there was no depth of earth. |
|
13:5
And other [seed] fell upon a rock, so that it had not much soil: and it sprung up forthwith, because there was no depth of earth. |
13:6
But when the sun was risen, it burned, and, because it had no root, it withered away. |
|
13:6
But when the sun was up it wilted. And, because it lacked root, it dried up. |
13:7
And another fell among the thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked it. |
|
13:7
And other [seed] fell among thorns: and the thorns shot up, and choked it. |
13:8
And another fell into good earth, and gave fruits, this a hundred, another sixty, and another thirty. |
|
13:8
And other [seed] fell on good ground; and bore fruits, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold. |
13:9
He who hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
|
13:9
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
13:10
And his disciples approached, saying to him, Why dost thou speak to them in parables? |
|
13:10
And his disciples came and said to him, Why discoursest thou to them in similitudes? |
13:11
He replied and said to them, Because unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of heaven, but unto them it is not given. |
|
13:11
And he answered, and said to them: Because, to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. |
13:12
For unto him who hath, it shall be given, and it shall be increased to him: but [as] to him who hath not, that also which he hath shall be taken from him. |
|
13:12
For to him that hath, shall be given; and he shall abound: but from him that hath not, even what he hath shall be taken from him. |
13:13
On this account I speak to them in parables. Hence they see, and (yet) see not; and they hear, and (yet) hear not, neither understand; |
|
13:13
For this cause I discourse to them in similitudes, because they see and do not see, and they hear and do not hear, nor understand. |
13:14
and accomplished in them is the prophecy of Eshaia, who said, that hearing they should hear, but not understand, and seeing they should see, but not know. |
|
13:14
And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, who said: By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and by seeing ye see, and shall not know: |
13:15
For the heart of this people is become gross, and with their ears they have heard heavily, and their eyes they have shut, that they may not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts, and be converted, and I heal them. |
|
13:15
For the heart of this people hath grown fat, and with their ears they have heard heavily, and their eyes they have closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and should hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should turn; and I should heal them. |
13:16
But blessed are your eyes which see, and your ears which hear: |
|
13:16
But happy are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. |
13:17
for, Amen I say unto you, that many prophets and just ones have desired to behold what you see, and have not beheld, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard. |
|
13:17
For verily I say to you, That many prophets and righteous [men] longed to see what ye see, and did not see [it]; and to hear what ye hear, and did not hear [it]. |
13:18
You, then, attend to the comparison of the seed: |
|
13:18
But hear ye the similitude of the seed. |
13:19
(When) any one who heareth the doctrine of the kingdom doth not understand it, there cometh the evil (one), and snatcheth away the doctrine that was sown in his heart: this is what by the road-side was sown. |
|
13:19
Every one that heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, the evil one cometh and snatcheth away the seed sowed in his heart: this is what was sowed by the side of the path. |
13:20
But that which was sown upon the rock is he who heareth the word, and at once with joy apprehendeth it. |
|
13:20
And that which was sowed on the rock, is he that heareth the word, and at once receiveth it with joy. |
13:21
Yet hath he no root in him, but is (only) for a time; and when affliction or persecution occurs on account of the doctrine, he is quickly offended. |
|
13:21
Yet hath he no root in him, but is of short duration, and when there is trouble or persecution on account of the word, he soon stumbleth. |
13:22
That sown [in] the place of thorns, is he who heareth the word, but the anxious thought of this world and the illusions of riches stifle the word in him, and he is without fruits. |
|
13:22
And that which was sowed among thorns, is he that heareth the word; and care for this world and the deceptiveness of riches, choke the word; and he is without fruits. |
13:23
But that which upon good ground was sown is he who heareth my doctrine, and understandeth (it), and giveth fruits, and produceth, whether a hundred, or sixty, or thirty fold. |
|
13:23
But that which was sowed on good ground, is he that heareth my word, and understandeth. and beareth fruits, and yieldeth, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, and some thirtyfold. |
13:24 ¶
ANOTHER comparison he allegorized unto them, and said: The kingdom of heaven is like unto a man who sowed good seed in his field. |
|
13:24
Another similitude he proposed to them, and said: The kingdom of heaven is like to a man who sowed good seed in his field. |
13:25
And while men slept, came his adversary, and sowed zizania among the wheat, and went. |
|
13:25
And while people were asleep, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. |
13:26
And when the plant sprang up and produced fruit, then appeared the zizania. |
|
13:26
And when the plant shot up and bore fruits, then appeared also the tares. |
13:27
And the labourers of the house-lord drew near and said to him, Our lord, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? From whence then is the zizania in it? |
|
13:27
And the servants of the householder came, and said to him, Our lord, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? From whence are the tares in it. |
13:28
But he said to them, A foeman hath done this. The labourers say to him, Art thou willing that we go and gather them? |
|
13:28
And he said to them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said to him, Is it thy pleasure that we go and gather them out? |
13:29
But he said to them, (No,) lest, when ye gather the zizania, you root out with them the wheat also. |
|
13:29
And he said to them, [No,] lest, while ye gather out the tares, ye also eradicate the wheat with them. |
13:30
Leave (them), that both may grow together till the harvest; and in the season of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather first the zizania, and bind them (together in) bundles, that they may burn; but the wheat collect into my barns. |
|
13:30
Let them both grow together until the harvest; and at the time of harvest, I will say to the reapers, Gather out first the tares, and bind them in bundles to be burned; but the wheat gather ye into my granary. |
13:31
Another comparison allegorized he to them, and said: The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard, which a man took and sowed in his field. |
|
13:31
Another similitude proposed he to them, and said: The kingdom of heaven is like to a kernel of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. |
13:32
This is less than all other seeds; but when it has grown, it is greater than all herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the fowl of the heavens come (and) build in its branches. |
|
13:32
And this is the least of all seeds; but when it is grown, it is greater than all the herbs, and becometh a tree, so that a bird of heaven may come and nestle in its branches. |
13:33
Another parable he spake to them: The kingdom of heaven resembles that leaven which a woman took and hid in three satas of meal, until the whole was leavened. |
|
13:33
Another similitude spake he to them, The kingdom of heaven is like the leaven, which a woman took and buried in three measures of meal, until the whole fermented. |
13:34
All these spake Jeshu in parables to the multitude; and without a parable he did not speak with them. |
|
13:34
All these things Jesus discoursed to the multitude in similitudes; and without similitudes he did not discourse with them. |
13:35
That there should be fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet, who said, I will open my mouth in comparisons, and pour forth things hidden from before the foundation of the world. |
|
13:35
That so might be fulfilled that which was spoken by the prophet, who said: I will open my mouth in similitudes; I will utter things concealed from before the foundation of the world. |
13:36
Then Jeshu dismissed the multitudes, and came into the house; and his disciples drew near him, and said to him, Expound to us the comparison of the zizania of the field. |
|
13:36
Then Jesus sent away the multitudes, and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, and said: Explain to us the similitude of the tares and the field. |
13:37
He answered and said to them, He who sowed the good seed is the Son of man. |
|
13:37
And he answered, and said to them: He that soweth the good seed, is the Son of God. |
13:38
The field is the world. Now, the good seed are the sons of the kingdom, but the zizania are the sons of the evil one. |
|
13:38
And the field is the world. And the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked One. |
13:39
The adversary who sowed them is Satana; the harvest is the consummation of the world; the reapers are the angels. |
|
13:39
The enemy that sowed them, is Satan. The harvest is the end of the world: and the reapers are the angels. |
13:40
As, therefore, the zizania are gathered and burned in the fire, so shall it be in the completion of this world. |
|
13:40
As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so will it be in the end of the world. |
13:41
The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall collect from his kingdom all those who cause offence, and all (who) work iniquity, |
|
13:41
The Son of man will send forth his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all the stumbling blocks, and all the doers of evil; |
13:42
and shall throw them into a furnace of fire; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. |
|
13:42
and will cast them into a furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. |
13:43
Then the just shall shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
|
13:43
Then will the righteous shine as the sun, in the kingdom of their Father. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
13:44
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure which was hidden in a field, (and) which a man found and concealed, and from joy went and sold all that he had, and bought that field. |
|
13:44
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure that is hid in a field; which when a man findeth, he concealeth it, and, from his joy, he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. |
13:45
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man a merchant, who sought goodly pearls; |
|
13:45
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchantman, who sought after rich pearls: |
13:46
but who, when he had found one pearl of exceeding price, went, sold all that he had, and bought it. |
|
13:46
and when he found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it. |
13:47
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, which was thrown into the sea, and from every kind collected. |
|
13:47
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a sweep net, which was cast into the sea, and collected [fishes] of every kind. |
13:48
And when it was full, they drew to the shore, and sat down, and selected; and the good they threw into vessels, and the bad they cast without. |
|
13:48
And when it was full, they drew it to the shores of the sea; and they sat down and culled over: and the good they put into vessels, and the bad they cast away. |
13:49
Thus shall it be at the consummation of the world. The angels shall go forth, and separate the evil from among the just, |
|
13:49
So will it be in the end of the world. The angels will go forth, and will sever the wicked from among the just; |
13:50
and cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth! |
|
13:50
and will cast them into a furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. |
13:51
Jeshu said to them, Have you understood all these? They say to him, Yes, our Lord. |
|
13:51
Jesus said to them: Have ye understood all these things? They say to him: Yes, our Lord. |
13:52
He saith to them, On this account every scribe who is learned in the kingdom of heaven, is like to a man a house-lord, who bringeth forth from his treasuries the new and the old. |
|
13:52
He said to them: Therefore every Scribe who is instructed for the kingdom of heaven, is like a man who is master of a house, who bringeth forth from his treasures things new and old. |
13:53 ¶
AND when Jeshu had finished these parables, he passed from thence, |
|
13:53
And it was so, that when Jesus had ended these similitudes, he departed thence. |
13:54
and came to his city, and taught them in their synagogues, so that they were astounded and said, Whence hath he (Whence to him) this wisdom and these powers? |
|
13:54
And he entered into his own city. And he taught them in their synagogues, in such manner that they wondered, and said: Whence hath he this wisdom and [these] works of power? |
13:55
Is not this the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mariam, and his brothers, Jakub, and Josi, and Shemun, and Jehuda? |
|
13:55
Is not this man the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers James and Joses and Simon and Judas? |
13:56
and his sisters, all, are they not with us? Whence to this one all these? |
|
13:56
And all his sisters, are they not with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? |
13:57
And they were offended with him. But Jeshu said to them, No prophet is contemned except in his own city, and in his own house. |
|
13:57
And they were stumbled at him. But Jesus said to them: There is no prophet who is little, except in his own city and in his own house. |
13:58
And he did not many miracles there on account of their unbelief. |
|
13:58
And he did not perform there many works of power, because of their unbelief. |
