20:1 ¶
AND it was on one of the days, while he taught the people in the temple and evangelized, the chief priests and scribes with the elders rose up against him, |
|
20:1
And on one of those days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching, the chief priests and Scribes, with the Elders, came upon him, |
20:2
and said to him, Tell us by what authority thou doest these, and who is he who gave thee this authority? |
|
20:2
and said to him: Tell us, by what authority thou doest these things? And who is it, that gave thee this authority? |
20:3
Jeshu answered and said to them, I will also ask of you a word, and tell you me: |
|
20:3
Jesus answered, and said to them: I also will ask you a word, and tell ye me. |
20:4
the baptism of Juchanon, from heaven was it, or from the sons of men? |
|
20:4
The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? |
20:5
But they reasoned within themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven, he saith to us, Why did you not believe him? |
|
20:5
And they reasoned with themselves, and said: If we say, From heaven; he will say to us, And why did ye not believe him? |
20:6
But if we shall say, From men, all the people will stone us; for they are persuaded that Juchanon was a prophet. |
|
20:6
But if we say, From men; all the people will stone us; for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. |
20:7
And they said to him, We know not from whence it is. |
|
20:7
And they said to him: We do not know, whence it was. |
20:8
Jeshu saith to them, Nor tell I you by what authority I do these. |
|
20:8
Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell you, by what authority I do these things. |
20:9
And he began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vinery, and let it to husbandmen, and removed for a great time. |
|
20:9
And he began to utter this similitude to the people: A certain man planted a vineyard, and leased it to cultivators, and went abroad for a long time. |
20:10
And at the season he sent his servant to the husbandmen that they should give him of the fruit of the vinery. But the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. |
|
20:10
And in time, he sent his servant to the cultivators, that they might give him of the fruits of the vineyard. But the cultivators beat him, and sent him away empty. |
20:11
And he added and sent another servant; but they beat him also, and maltreated him, and sent him away empty. |
|
20:11
And again he sent another servant; and him also they beat, and treated with rudeness, and sent empty away. |
20:12
And he added and sent a third; but they also wounded him, and cast him out. |
|
20:12
And again he sent the third. And they wounded him, and cast him out. |
20:13
The lord of the vinery saith, What shall I do? I will send my son, the beloved; now will they see him and reverence him. |
|
20:13
The lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my dear son. Perhaps they will look upon him, and be ashamed. |
20:14
But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours. |
|
20:14
But when the cultivators saw him, they reasoned with themselves, and said: This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours. |
20:15
And they cast him out of the vinery, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vinery do to them? |
|
20:15
And they cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them? |
20:16
He will come and destroy those husbandmen, and will give the vinery to others. But when they heard, they said, May this not be! |
|
20:16
He will come, and destroy those cultivators, and will lease the vineyard to others. And when they heard [it], they said: This shall not be. |
20:17
But he beheld them, and said, And what is that which is written, The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner? |
|
20:17
And he looked upon them, and said: What is that which is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, is become the chief corner stone? |
20:18
And every one who shall fall upon this stone shall be broken; and every one on whom it shall fall it will scatter him. |
|
20:18
And whoever shall fall upon this stone, will be broken; and on whomsoever it shall fall, it will crush him in pieces. |
20:19
But the chief priests and Sophree sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; but they feared the people, for they knew that concerning them(selves) he had spoken this parable. |
|
20:19
And the chief priests and Scribes sought to lay hands on him, at that time; but they were afraid of the people; for they knew, that he spoke this similitude against them. |
20:20
And they sent to him spies, who should resemble just men, that they might take him in discourse, and deliver him to the judgment and to the authority of the governor. |
|
20:20
And they sent to him spies, who feigned themselves righteous men, that they might insnare him in discourse, and deliver him up to a court, and to the authority of the president. |
20:21
And they asked him, and said to him, Doctor, we know that thou speakest and teachest rightly, neither dost thou deceive, but with integrity thou teachest the way of Aloha. |
|
20:21
And they questioned him, and said to him: Teacher, we know that thou speakest and teachest correctly, and hast no respect of persons, but teachest the way of God in truth. |
20:22
Is it lawful for us to give head-silver to Cesar or not? |
|
20:22
Is it lawful for us to pay head-money to Caesar, or not? |
20:23
But he understood their subtilty, and said, Why tempt you me? |
|
20:23
But he perceived their craftiness, and said: Why tempt ye me? |
20:24
Show me a dinara. Of whom upon it is the image and the inscription? But they said, Of Cesar. |
|
20:24
Show me a denarius. Whose is this image and superscription upon it? They said to him, Caesar's. |
20:25
Jeshu saith to them, Give then of Cesar's to Cesar, and of Aloha's unto Aloha. |
|
20:25
Jesus said to them: Then, give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's. |
20:26
And they could not take hold of his words before the people; and they wondered at his answer, and were silent. |
|
20:26
And they could not catch from him a word [of accusation] before the people: and they were surprised at his answers, and were silent. |
20:27 ¶
BUT some of the Zadukoyee approached, they who say that there is no resurrection; |
|
20:27
And some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came and questioned him, |
20:28
and they questioned him, and said to him, Doctor, Musha wrote to us that if a man's brother die having a wife who hath not children, his brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. |
|
20:28
and said to him: Teacher, Moses wrote to us, that if a man's brother die, who had a wife without children, his [surviving] brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed to his [deceased] brother. |
20:29
But there were seven brethren; and the first took; a wife, and died without children. |
|
20:29
Now, there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and died without children. |
20:30
And the second took his wife, and he died without children. |
|
20:30
And the second took her to wife; and he died without children. |
20:31
And the third also took her; and so also the seven of them: and they died and left no children. |
|
20:31
And again, the third took her, and in like manner also all the seven; and they died, and left no children. |
20:32
Died in the end also the woman. |
|
20:32
At last, the woman likewise died. |
20:33
In the resurrection therefore, whose of them shall she be the wife? for the seven of them had taken her. |
|
20:33
In the resurrection, therefore, of which of them will she be the wife, for the seven took her? |
20:34
Jeshu saith to them, The sons of this world take wives, and women become (the wives) of men: |
|
20:34
Jesus said to them: The children of this world take wives, and wives are given to husbands. |
20:35
but they who of that world are worthy, and of the resurrection which is from among the dead, take not wives, neither do women become (the wives) of men. |
|
20:35
But they who are worthy of that world, and of the resurrection from the dead, do not take wives, nor are wives given to husbands. |
20:36
Neither again can they die, for they are as the angels; and the children are they of Aloha, because they have become the children of the resurrection. |
|
20:36
Neither can they die any more; for they are as the angels, and are the children of God, because they are children of the resurrection. |
20:37
But that the dead arise, Musha also showeth; for he commemorateth at the bush, while he saith, The Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Ishok, and the God of Jakub. |
|
20:37
But that the dead will arise, even Moses showed; for, at the bush, he maketh mention, while he saith: The Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. |
20:38
But he was not the God of the dead, but of the living: for they all live unto him. |
|
20:38
Now God is not [the God] of the dead, but of the living; for they all live to him. |
20:39
And some of the Sophree answered and said to him, Doctor, thou hast well said. |
|
20:39
And some of the Scribes answered, and said to him: Teacher, thou hast spoken well. |
20:40
And they dared not question him again of any thing. |
|
20:40
And they did not again venture to question him, on any matter. |
20:41 ¶
AND he said to them, How say the Sophree concerning the Meshicha, that he is the Son of David? |
|
20:41
And he said also to them: How do the Scribes say of Messiah, that he is the son of David? |
20:42
And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, |
|
20:42
And David himself said, in the book of Psalms: The Lord said to my Lord, seat thyself at my right hand, |
20:43
until I put thine adversaries beneath thy feet. |
|
20:43
until I shall place thy foes under thy feet. |
20:44
If David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he his son? |
|
20:44
If David, therefore, called him, My Lord; how is he his son? |
20:45
And while all the people heard, he said to his disciples, |
|
20:45
And while all the people heard, he said to his disciples: |
20:46
Beware of the Sophree, who will to walk in stoles, and love the shaloma in public places, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the chief reclining-places at evening feasts; |
|
20:46
Beware of the Scribes, who choose to walk in long robes, and love a salutation in the streets, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the chief couches at suppers: |
20:47
who devour the houses of widows, and for the occasion prolong their prayers: these shall receive the greater judgment. |
|
20:47
who eat up the houses of widows, under pretence that they prolong their prayers. They will receive a greater condemnation. |
