19:1 ¶
AND while Apolu was in Kurinthos, Paulos itinerated through the upper countries unto Ephesos; and he asked those disciples whom he found there, |
|
19:1
And while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul travelled over the upper countries to Ephesus. And he inquired of the disciples whom he found there, |
19:2
Have you received the Spirit of Holiness from [the time] that you believed? They answered and said to him, It hath not been heard by us whether there be the Spirit. |
|
19:2
Have ye received the Holy Spirit, since ye believed? They answered and said to him: If there be a Holy Spirit, it hath not come to our hearing. |
19:3
He saith to them, And into what were you baptized? They said, Into the baptism of Juhanon. |
|
19:3
He said to them: Into what then were ye baptized? They say: Into the baptism of John. |
19:4
Paulos saith to them, Juhanon baptized the people with the baptism of repentance, saying that they should believe in him who was coming after him, who is Jeshu Meshiha. |
|
19:4
Paul said to them: John baptized the people with the baptism of repentance, while he told them to believe in him who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus the Messiah. |
19:5
And when they heard these (words), they were baptized in the name of our Lord Jeshu Meshiha. |
|
19:5
And when they heard these things, they were baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus Messiah. |
19:6
And Paulos laid on them the hand, and the Spirit of Holiness came upon them, and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. |
|
19:6
And Paul laid [his] hand on them; and the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in various tongues, and prophesied. |
19:7
But all the men were twelve. |
|
19:7
And all the persons were twelve. |
19:8
And Paulos entered the synagogue, and discoursed boldly three months, and persuaded concerning the kingdom of Aloha. |
|
19:8
And Paul entered into the synagogue, and spoke boldly three months, persuading in regard to the kingdom of God. |
19:9
And men of them were obdurate, and contended, and reviled the way of Aloha, before the assembly of the people. Then Paulos removed and separated from them the disciples, and every day discoursed with them in the school of a man whose name was Tyranos. |
|
19:9
And some of them were hardened, and disputatious, and reviled the way of God before the assembly of the people. Then Paul withdrew himself, and separated the disciples from them. And he discoursed with them daily in the school of a man named Tyrannus. |
19:10
And this was done two years, until all who dwelt in Asia, Jihudoyee and Aramoyee, had heard the word of the Lord. |
|
19:10
And this continued for two years, until all who resided in [Proconsular] Asia, both Jews and Gentiles, heard the word of the Lord. |
19:11
And great power-works wrought Aloha by the hand of Paulos; |
|
19:11
And God wrought very great miracles by the hand of Paul: |
19:12
so that they brought even from the garments that were upon his body napkins or wrappings, and laid them upon the sick, and the diseases went from them; and demons also went forth. |
|
19:12
so that, from the clothes on his body, napkins and rags were carried and laid upon the sick, and the diseases left them, and demons also went out. |
19:13 ¶
BUT men, Jihudoyee, also, who went about and adjured demons, willed to adjure in the name of our Lord Jeshu over those who had unclean spirits, saying, We adjure you in the name of Jeshu whom Paulos preacheth. |
|
19:13
And moreover certain Jews, who went: about exorcising demons, were disposed to exorcise in the name of our Lord Jesus over those who had unclean spirits, by saying: We adjure you, in the name of that Jesus whom Paul announceth. |
19:14
There were seven sons of a man, a certain Jihudoya, chief of the priests, whose name was Skeva, who did this. |
|
19:14
And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, who did this. |
19:15
And that evil demon answered and said to them, Jeshu I acknowledge, and Paulos I know; but who are you? |
|
19:15
And the evil demon answered and said to them: Jesus I well know, and Paul I know, but as for you, who are ye? |
19:16
And the man in whom was the evil spirit sprang upon them, and was strong against them, and threw them, and they, naked and wounded, fled from that house. |
|
19:16
And the man in whom was the evil demon leaped upon them, and overpowered them, and threw them down: and they fled out of the house denuded and bruised. |
19:17
And this was known to all the Jihudoyee and Aramoyee who dwelt in Ephesos: and fear fell upon them all, and the name of our Lord Jeshu Meshiha was exalted. |
|
19:17
And this became known to all the Jews and Gentiles, who resided at Ephesus. And fear fell on them all, and the name of our Lord Jesus Messiah was exalted. |
19:18
And many of those who believed came and acknowledged their sins, and confessed whatever they had done. |
|
19:18
And many of them that believed, came and narrated their faults, and confessed what they had done. |
19:19
Many also of the magicians collected their writings and brought and burned them before all men; and they reckoned the price of them, and it ascended to silver five myriads. |
|
19:19
And also many magicians collected their books, and brought and burned them before every body: and they computed the cost of them, and it amounted to fifty thousand [pieces] of silver. |
19:20
And thus with great power prevailed and increased the faith of Aloha. |
|
19:20
And thus with great power was the faith of God strengthened and increased. |
19:21
But when these were fulfilled, Paulos set in his mind to itinerate throughout all Makedunia and Akaia, and to go into Urishlem. And he said, When I shall have gone thither, it behoveth me Ruma also to see. |
|
19:21
And when these things had been accomplished, Paul purposed in his mind, to make the circuit of all Macedonia and Achaia, and [then] go to Jerusalem. And he said: After I have gone thither, I must also see Rome. |
19:22
And he sent two men of those who ministered to him to Makedunia, Timotheos and Aristos; but he remained a time in Asia. |
|
19:22
And he sent two persons, of those that ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, into Macedonia; but he himself remained for a time in Asia. |
19:23 ¶
BUT there was made at that time a great tumult on account of the way of Aloha. |
|
19:23
And at that time there was great commotion respecting the way of God. |
19:24
For there was a certain worker of silver there whose name was Dimitrios, who made shrines of silver of Artemis, and he produced for the sons of his art great gains. |
|
19:24
For a certain silversmith was there, named Demetrius, who made silver shrines for Diana, and afforded great profits to the artisans of his trade. |
19:25
This (man) assembled all the sons of his art and those who wrought with them, and said to them, Men, you know that all our merchandise is from this work; |
|
19:25
He assembled all the artisans of his trade, and those who labored with them, and said to them: Gentlemen, ye know that our gains are all from this manufacture. |
19:26
and you also hear and see, that not only the sons of Ephesos, but also many of all Asia, this Paulos persuadeth, and hath perverted them, saying, that there be no gods which by the hands of men are made. |
|
19:26
And ye also know and see, that not only the citizens of Ephesus, but also the mass of all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and enticed away, by saying, that those are not gods, which are made by the hands of men. |
19:27
And not only is this business defamed and brought to an end, but also the temple of Artemis the great goddess is reputed as nothing, and she also, the goddess of all Asia, and (whom) all the nations worship, is despised. |
|
19:27
And not only is this occupation slandered and impeded, but also the temple of the great goddess Diana is accounted as nothing; and likewise the goddess herself of all Asia, and whom all nations worship, is contemned. |
19:28
And when they heard these (words) they were filled with wrath; and they cried, and said, Great is Artemis of the Ephesoyee. |
|
19:28
And when they heard these things they were filled with wrath; and they cried out, and said: Great is Diana of the Ephesians. |
19:29
And the whole city was perturbed, and they ran together and came to the theatre; and seizing, they led with them Gaios and Aristarkos, men of Makedunia, companions of Paulos. |
|
19:29
And the whole city was in commotion; and they ran together, and entered the theatre. And they caught, and bore along with them, Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, and associates of Paul. |
19:30 ¶
AND Paulos willed to enter the theatre, and the disciples restrained him. |
|
19:30
And Paul was disposed to go into the theatre: but the disciples restrained him. |
19:31
And the chiefs of Asia, because they were his friends, sent, praying of him not to deliver himself by going into the theatre. |
|
19:31
And likewise the chiefs of Asia, because they were his friends, sent and requested of him, that he would not expose himself by going into the theatre. |
19:32
But the crowd who were in the theatre were greatly commoved, and others cried other things; for many of them knew not on what account they were assembled. |
|
19:32
And the multitudes that were in the theatre were in great confusion, and cried, some one thing, and some another: and many of them knew not for what cause they had come together. |
19:33
But the people of the Jihudoyee who were there appointed of them a man a Jihudoya, whose name was Aleksandros; and when he stood (forth) he signed that he would apologize to the people. |
|
19:33
And the Jewish people who were there, brought forward one of their men, a Jew, named Alexander. And he, rising up, waved his hand, and wished to make a defence before the people. |
19:34
And when they knew that he was a Jihudoya, all of them cried with one voice, as two hours, Great is Artemis of the Ephesoyee! |
|
19:34
But they knowing him to be a Jew, all cried out with one voice, about two hours: Great is Diana of the Ephesians. |
19:35
And the chief of the city stilled them, saying, Men, Ephesoyee, who is there of mankind who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesoyee is a votaress of the great Artemis, and of her image which descended from heaven? |
|
19:35
But the chief of the city tranquillized them, by saying: Men of Ephesus, What person is there, among men, who doth not know the city of the Ephesians to be devoted to the worship of the great Diana, and of her image that descended from heaven? |
19:36
Therefore, since no man can contradict this, it behoves you to be silent, and to do nothing in haste. |
|
19:36
Since therefore no one can gainsay this, ye ought to be tranquil, and to do nothing with precipitancy. |
19:37
Yet have you brought these men who have neither spoiled temples nor blasphemed our goddess. |
|
19:37
For ye have brought forward these men, when they have robbed no temples, and have not reviled our goddess. |
19:38
But if this Dimitrios and the sons of his craft have strife with any man, behold, the proconsul is in the city, (and) there are officers: let them go nigh and judge one with another. |
|
19:38
But if Demetrius and the men of his trade have a controversy with any one, lo, there is a proconsul in the city, they are men of dexterity, let them approach and litigate with one another. |
19:39
And if you require other (procedure), in the place which is given by the law for an assembly it shall be resolved. |
|
19:39
Or if you desire any other thing, it may be determined in the place assigned by law for an assembly. |
19:40
For now also are we standing in peril of being accused as disturbers, because we cannot make excuse for the concourse of this day, inasmuch as we have met uselessly, and have made a tumult without cause. |
|
19:40
{19:40a} Because too we are now in danger of being accused as seditious, since we cannot give a reason for the meeting of this day, because we have assembled needlessly, and been tumultuous without a cause. |
19:41
And when these he had said, he dissolved the assembly. |
|
19:41
{19:40b} And having said these things, he dismissed the assembly. |
