 4:1 ¶ And now, O Israel, hearken unto the statutes and unto the ordinances, which I teach you, to do them; that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which Jehovah, the God of your fathers, giveth you.

 4:1 ¶ Nowº therefore hearken,ºº O Israel,º untoº the statutesº and untoº the judgments,º whichº Iº teachºº you, for to doºº [them], thatº ye may live,ºº and go inºº and possessººº the landº whichº the LORDº Godº of your fathersº givethºº you.

 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of Jehovah your God which I command you.

 4:2 Ye shall notº addºº untoº the wordº whichº Iº commandºº you, neitherº shall ye diminishºº [ought] fromº it, that ye may keepººº the commandmentsº of the LORDº your Godº whichº Iº commandºº you.

 4:3 Your eyes have seen what Jehovah did because of Baal-peor; for all the men that followed Baal-peor, Jehovah thy God hath destroyed them from the midst of thee.

 4:3 Your eyesº have seenººº whatº the LORDº didºº because of Baalpeor:º forº allº the menº thatº followedººº Baalpeor,º the LORDº thy Godº hath destroyedºº them from amongºº you.

 4:4 But ye that did cleave unto Jehovah your God are alive every one of you this day.

 4:4 But yeº that did cleaveº unto the LORDº your Godº [are] aliveº every oneº of you this day.º

 4:5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as Jehovah my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the midst of the land whither ye go in to possess it.

 4:5 Behold,ºº I have taughtºº you statutesº and judgments,º even asº the LORDº my Godº commandedºº me, that ye should doºº soº inº the landº whitherºº yeº goºº to possessºº it.

 4:6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, that shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

 4:6 Keepºº therefore and doºº [them]; forº thisº [is] your wisdomº and your understandingº in the sightº of the nations,º whichº shall hearººº allº theseº statutes,º and say,ºº Surelyº thisº greatº nationº [is] a wiseº and understandingºº people.º

 4:7 For what great nation is there, that hath a god so nigh unto them, as Jehovah our God is whensoever we call upon him?

 4:7 Forº whatº nationº [is there so] great,º whoº [hath] Godº [so] nighº untoº them, as the LORDº our Godº [is] in allº [things that] we callºº uponº him [for]?

 4:8 And what great nation is there, that hath statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?

 4:8 And whatº nationº [is there so] great,º thatº hath statutesº and judgmentsº [so] righteousº as allº thisº law,º whichº Iº setºº beforeº you this day?º

 4:9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes saw, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life; but make them known unto thy children and thy children's children;

 4:9 Onlyº take heedºº to thyself, and keepºº thy soulº diligently,º lestº thou forgetººº the thingsº whichº thine eyesº have seen,ºº and lestº they departºº from thy heartºº allº the daysº of thy life:º but teachºº them thy sons,º and thy sons'º sons;º

 4:10 the day that thou stoodest before Jehovah thy God in Horeb, when Jehovah said unto me, Assemble me the people, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.

 4:10 [Specially] the dayº thatº thou stoodestºº beforeº the LORDº thy Godº in Horeb,º when the LORDº saidºº untoº me, Gatherºº me the peopleº together,ºººº and I will make them hearººº my words,º thatº they may learnºº to fearºº me allº the daysº thatº theyº shall liveº uponº the earth,º and [that] they may teachºº their children.º

 4:11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the heart of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.

 4:11 And ye came nearºº and stoodºº underº the mountain;º and the mountainº burnedºº with fireº untoº the midstº of heaven,º with darkness,º clouds,º and thick darkness.ºº

 4:12 And Jehovah spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of words, but ye saw no form; only [ye heard] a voice.

 4:12 And the LORDº spakeºº untoº you out of the midstºº of the fire:º yeº heardºº the voiceº of the words,º but sawºº noº similitude;º onlyº [ye heard] a voice.º

 4:13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.

 4:13 And he declaredºº unto youº his covenant,º whichº he commandedºº you to perform,ºº [even] tenº commandments;º and he wroteºº them uponº twoº tablesº of stone.º

 4:14 ¶ And Jehovah commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.

 4:14 ¶ And the LORDº commandedºº me at thatº timeº to teachºº you statutesº and judgments,º that ye might doºº them in the landº whitherºº yeº go overºº to possessºº it.

 4:15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of form on the day that Jehovah spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire.

 4:15 Take ye therefore goodº heedººº unto yourselves;º forº ye sawºº noº mannerº of similitudeº on the dayº [that] the LORDº spakeºº untoº you in Horebº out of the midstºº of the fire:º

 4:16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

 4:16 Lestº ye corruptºº [yourselves], and makeºº you a graven image,º the similitudeº of anyº figure,º the likenessº of maleº orº female,º

 4:17 the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flieth in the heavens,

 4:17 The likenessº of anyº beastº thatº [is] on the earth,º the likenessº of anyº wingedº fowlº thatº fliethºº in the air,º

 4:18 the likeness of anything that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth;

 4:18 The likenessº of any thingº that creepethºº on the ground,º the likenessº of anyº fishº thatº [is] in the watersº beneathºº the earth:º

 4:19 and lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, thou be drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which Jehovah thy God hath allotted unto all the peoples under the whole heaven.

 4:19 And lestº thou lift upºº thine eyesº unto heaven,º and when thou seestººº the sun,º and the moon,º and the stars,º [even] allº the hostº of heaven,º shouldest be drivenºº to worshipºº them, and serveºº them, whichº the LORDº thy Godº hath dividedººº unto allº nationsº underº the wholeº heaven.º

 4:20 But Jehovah hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as at this day.

 4:20 But the LORDº hath takenºº you, and brought you forthººº out of the ironº furnace,ºº [even] out of Egypt,ºº to beº unto him a peopleº of inheritance,º as [ye are] thisº day.º

 4:21 Furthermore Jehovah was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over the Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:

 4:21 Furthermore the LORDº was angryºº with me for your sakes,ºº and swareºº that I should notº go overººº Jordan,º and that I should notº goºº inº untoº that goodº land,º whichº the LORDº thy Godº givethºº thee [for] an inheritance:º

 4:22 but I must die in this land, I must not go over the Jordan; but ye shall go over, and possess that good land.

 4:22 Butº Iº must dieºº in thisº land,º I must notº go overººº Jordan:º but yeº shall go over,ºº and possessººº thatº goodº land.º

 4:23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of Jehovah your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image in the form of anything which Jehovah thy God hath forbidden thee.

 4:23 Take heedºº unto yourselves, lestº ye forgetººº the covenantº of the LORDº your God,º whichº he madeºº withº you, and makeºº you a graven image,º [or] the likenessº of anyº [thing], whichº the LORDº thy Godº hath forbiddenºº thee.

 4:24 For Jehovah thy God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.

 4:24 Forº the LORDº thy Godº [is] a consumingºº fire,º [even] a jealousº God.º

 4:25 ¶ When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have been long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image in the form of anything, and shall do that which is evil in the sight of Jehovah thy God, to provoke him to anger;

 4:25 ¶ Whenº thou shalt begetºº children,º and children'sº children,º and ye shall have remained longºº in the land,º and shall corruptºº [yourselves], and makeºº a graven image,º [or] the likenessº of anyº [thing], and shall doºº evilº in the sightº of the LORDº thy God,º to provoke him to anger:ºº

 4:26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over the Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

 4:26 I callººº heavenº and earthº to witnessºº against you this day,º thatº ye shall soonº utterlyºº perishºº from offºº the landº whereuntoºº yeº go overººº Jordanº to possessºº it; ye shall notº prolongºº [your] daysº uponº it, butº shall utterlyºº be destroyed.ºº

 4:27 And Jehovah will scatter you among the peoples, and ye shall be left few in number among the nations, whither Jehovah shall lead you away.

 4:27 And the LORDº shall scatterºº you among the nations,º and ye shall be leftºº fewº in numberº among the heathen,º whitherºº the LORDº shall leadºº you.

 4:28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

 4:28 And thereº ye shall serveºº gods,º the workº of men'sº hands,º woodº and stone,º whichº neitherº see,ºº norº hear,ºº norº eat,ºº norº smell.ºº

 4:29 But from thence ye shall seek Jehovah thy God, and thou shalt find him, when thou searchest after him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

 4:29 But if from thenceºº thou shalt seekººº the LORDº thy God,º thou shalt findºº [him], ifº thou seekºº him with allº thy heartº and with allº thy soul.º

 4:30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, in the latter days thou shalt return to Jehovah thy God, and hearken unto his voice:

 4:30 When thou art in tribulation,º and allº theseº thingsº are comeºº upon thee, [even] in the latterº days,º if thou turnºº toº the LORDº thy God,º and shalt be obedientºº unto his voice;º

 4:31 for Jehovah thy God is a merciful God; he will not fail thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

 4:31 (Forº the LORDº thy Godº [is] a mercifulº God;)º he will notº forsakeºº thee, neitherº destroyºº thee, norº forgetººº the covenantº of thy fathersº whichº he swareºº unto them.

 4:32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and from the one end of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been [any such thing] as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?

 4:32 Forº askºº nowº of the daysº that are past,º whichº wereºº beforeº thee, sinceº the dayº thatº Godº createdºº manº uponº the earth,º and [ask] from the one sideºº of heavenº untoº the other,ºº whether there hath beenº [any such thing] as thisº greatº thingº [is], orº hath been heardºº like it?º

 4:33 Did ever a people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?

 4:33 Did [ever] peopleº hearºº the voiceº of Godº speakingº outºº of the midstºº of the fire,º asº thouº hast heard,ºº and live?ºº

 4:34 Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of [another] nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Jehovah your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

 4:34 Orº hath Godº assayedºº to goºº [and] takeºº him a nationº from the midstºº of [another] nation,º by temptations,º by signs,º and by wonders,º and by war,º and by a mightyº hand,º and by a stretched outºº arm,º and by greatº terrors,º according to allº thatº the LORDº your Godº didºº for you in Egyptº before your eyes?º

 4:35 Unto thee it was showed, that thou mightest know that Jehovah he is God; there is none else besides him.

 4:35 Unto theeº it was shewed,ºº that thou mightest knowºº thatº the LORDº heº [is] God;º [there is] noneº elseº besideºº him.º

 4:36 Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he made thee to see his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.

 4:36 Out ofº heavenº he made thee to hearººº his voice,º that he might instructºº thee: and uponº earthº he shewedºº theeº his greatº fire;º and thou heardestºº his wordsº out of the midstºº of the fire.º

 4:37 And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt;

 4:37 And becauseºº he lovedººº thy fathers,º therefore he choseºº their seedº afterº them, and brought thee outºº in his sightº with his mightyº powerº out of Egypt;ºº

 4:38 to drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as at this day.

 4:38 To drive outºº nationsº from beforeºº thee greaterº and mightierº thanº thou [art], to bringºº thee in,º to giveºº theeº their landº [for] an inheritance,º as [it is] thisº day.º

 4:39 Know therefore this day, and lay it to thy heart, that Jehovah he is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath; there is none else.

 4:39 Knowºº therefore this day,º and considerºº [it] inº thine heart,º thatº the LORDº heº [is] Godº in heavenº above,ºº and uponº the earthº beneath:ºº [there is] noneº else.º

 4:40 And thou shalt keep his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days in the land, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee, for ever.

 4:40 Thou shalt keepºº thereforeº his statutes,º and his commandments,º whichº Iº commandºº thee this day,º thatº it may go wellºº with thee, and with thy childrenº afterº thee, and thatº thou mayest prolongºº [thy] daysº uponº the earth,º whichº the LORDº thy Godº givethºº thee, for ever.ºº

 4:41 ¶ Then Moses set apart three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising;

 4:41 ¶ Thenº Mosesº severedºº threeº citiesº on this sideº Jordanº toward the sunrising;ºº

 4:42 that the manslayer might flee thither, that slayeth his neighbor unawares, and hated him not in time past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:

 4:42 That the slayerºº might fleeºº thither,º whichº should killººº his neighbourº unawares,ºº and hatedºº him notº in timesº past;ººº and that fleeingºº untoº oneº ofº theseº citiesº he might live:ºº

 4:43 [namely], Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.

 4:43 [Namely],º Bezerº in the wilderness,º in the plainº country,º of the Reubenites;º and Ramothº in Gilead,º of the Gadites;º and Golanº in Bashan,º of the Manassites.º

 4:44 ¶ And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:

 4:44 ¶ And thisº [is] the lawº whichº Mosesº setºº beforeº the childrenº of Israel:º

 4:45 these are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, when they came forth out of Egypt,

 4:45 Theseº [are] the testimonies,º and the statutes,º and the judgments,º whichº Mosesº spakeºº untoº the childrenº of Israel,º after they came forthºº out of Egypt,ºº

 4:46 beyond the Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, when they came forth out of Egypt.

 4:46 On this sideº Jordan,º in the valleyº over againstº Bethpeor,º in the landº of Sihonº kingº of the Amorites,º whoº dweltºº at Heshbon,º whomº Mosesº and the childrenº of Israelº smote,ºº after they were come forthºº out of Egypt:ºº

 4:47 And they took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising;

 4:47 And they possessedººº his land,º and the landº of Ogº kingº of Bashan,º twoº kingsº of the Amorites,º whichº [were] on this sideº Jordanº toward the sunrising;ºº

 4:48 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, even unto mount Sion (the same is Hermon),

 4:48 From Aroer,ºº whichº [is] byº the bankº of the riverº Arnon,º even untoº mountº Sion,º whichº [is] Hermon,º

 4:49 and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

 4:49 And allº the plainº on this sideº Jordanº eastward,º even untoº the seaº of the plain,º underº the springsº of Pisgah.º
