James 4

1 We are to strive against covetousness, 4 intemperance, 5 pride, 11 detraction, and rash judgments of others: 13 and not to be confident in the good success of worldly business, but mindful ever of the uncertainty of this life, to commit ourselves and all our affairs to God's providence.

 4:1 What 4159 is the source 4159 of quarrels 4171 and conflicts 3163 among 1722 you? Is not the source 1782 your pleasures 2237 that wage 4754 war 4754 in your members 3196?

 4:2 You lust 1937 and do not have 2192; [so] you commit 5407 murder 5407. You are envious 2206 and cannot 1410 3756 obtain 2013; [so] you fight 3164 and quarrel 4170. You do not have 2192 because 1223 you do not ask 154.

 4:3 You ask 154 and do not receive 2983, because 1360 you ask 154 with wrong 2560 motives 2560, so 2443 that you may spend 1159 [it] on your pleasures 2237.

 4:4 You adulteresses 3428, do you not know 3609a that friendship 5373 with the world 2889 is hostility 2189b toward God 2316? Therefore 3767 whoever 3739 1437 wishes 1014 to be a friend 5384 of the world 2889 makes 2525 himself an enemy 2190 of God 2316.

 4:5 Or 2228 do you think 1380 that the Scripture 1124 speaks 3004 to no 2761 purpose 2761: “He jealously 5355 desires 1971 the Spirit 4151 which 3739 He has made 2733b to dwell 2733b in us”?

 4:6 But He gives 1325 a greater 3173 grace 5485. Therefore 1352 [it] says 3004, “GOD 2316 IS OPPOSED 498 TO THE PROUD 5244a, BUT GIVES 1325 GRACE 5485 TO THE HUMBLE 5011.”

 4:7 Submit 5293 therefore 3767 to God 2316. Resist 436 the devil 1228 and he will flee 5343 from you.

 4:8 Draw 1448 near 1448 to God 2316 and He will draw 1448 near 1448 to you. Cleanse 2511 your hands 5495, you sinners 268; and purify 48 your hearts 2588, you double-minded 1374.

 4:9 Be miserable 5003 and mourn 3996 and weep 2799; let your laughter 1071 be turned 3346b into mourning 3997 and your joy 5479 to gloom 2726.

 4:10 Humble 5013 yourselves in the presence 1799 of the Lord 2962, and He will exalt 5312 you.

 4:11 ¶ Do not speak 2635 against 2635 one 240 another 240, brethren 80. He who speaks 2635 against 2635 a brother 80 or 2228 judges 2919 his brother 80, speaks 2635 against 2635 the law 3551 and judges 2919 the law 3551; but if 1487 you judge 2919 the law 3551, you are not a doer 4163 of the law 3551 but a judge 2923 [of it].

 4:12 There is [only] one 1520 Lawgiver 3550 and Judge 2923, the One who is able 1410 to save 4982 and to destroy 622; but who 5101 are you who judge 2919 your neighbor 4139?

 4:13 ¶ Come 33 now 3568, you who say 3004, “Today 4594 or 2228 tomorrow 839 we will go 4198 to such 3592 and such 3592 a city 4172, and spend 4160 a year 1763 there 1563 and engage 1710 in business 1710 and make 4160 a profit 2770.”

 4:14 Yet 3748 you do not know 1987 what 4169 your life 2222 will be like tomorrow 839. You are [just] a vapor 822 that appears 5316 for a little 3641 while 3641 and then 1899 vanishes 853 away 853.

 4:15 Instead 473, [you ought] to say 3004, “If 1437 the Lord 2962 wills 2309, we will live 2198 and also 2532 do 4160 this 3778 or 2228 that.”

 4:16 But as it is, you boast 2744 in your arrogance 212; all 3956 such 5108 boasting 2746a is evil 4190.

 4:17 Therefore 3767, to one who knows 3609a [the] right 2570 thing 2570 to do 4160 and does 4160 not do 4160 it, to him it is sin 266.
