to fightºº
with the Midianites?º
And they did chideºº
withº
him sharply.º |
 8:2
And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? |
|
 8:2
And he saidºº
untoº
them, Whatº
have I doneºº
nowº
in comparison of you? [Is] notº
the gleaningº
of the grapesº
of Ephraimº
betterº
than the vintageºº
of Abiezer?º |
 8:3
God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that. |

 8:3
Godº
hath deliveredºº
into your handsºº
the princesº

Orebº

their angerº
was abatedºº
towardºº
him, when he had saidºº
that.ººº |

And Gideon came to the Jordan, [and] passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing. |

he,º
and the threeº

menº
thatº
[were] withº
him, faint,º
yet pursuingºº
[them]. |
 8:5
And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian. |
|
 8:5
And he saidºº
unto the menºº
of Succoth,º
Give,ºº
I pray you,º
loavesº
of breadº
unto the peopleº
thatº
followº
me; forº
theyº
[be] faint,º
and Iº
am pursuingºº
afterº
Zebahº
and Zalmunna,º
kingsº
of Midian.º |
 8:6 ¶
And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thine army? |
|
 8:6 ¶
And the princesº
of Succothº
said,ºº
[Are] the handsº
of Zebahº
and Zalmunnaº
nowº
in thine hand,º
thatº
we should giveºº
breadº
unto thine army?º |
 8:7
And Gideon said, Therefore when Jehovah hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers. |
|
 8:7
And Gideonº
said,ºº
Thereforeº
when the LORDº
hath deliveredººº
Zebahº
and Zalmunnaº
into mine hand,º
then I will tearººº
your fleshº
withº
the thornsº
of the wildernessº
and withº
briers.º |

 8:8 ¶
And he went upºº
thenceºº
to Penuel,º
and spakeºº
untoº
them likewise:º
and the menºº
of Penuelº
answeredºº
him asº
the menºº
of Succothº
had answeredºº
[him]. |
 8:9
And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower. |
|
 8:9
And he spakeºº
alsoº
unto the menºº
of Penuel,º
saying,ºº
When I come againºº
in peace,º
I will break downººº
thisº

thousandº
[men], allº
that were leftºº
of allºº
the hostsº
of the childrenº
of the east:º
for there fellºº
an hundredº
and twentyº
thousandº
menº
that drewºº
sword.º |
 8:11 ¶
And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure. |
|
 8:11 ¶
And Gideonº
went upºº
by the wayº
of them that dweltºº
in tentsº
on the eastºº
of Nobahº
and Jogbehah,º
and smoteººº
the host:º
for the hostº
wasº
secure.º |
 8:12
And Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host. |
|
 8:12
And when Zebahº
and Zalmunnaº
fled,ºº
he pursuedºº
afterº
them, and tookººº
the twoº
kingsº
of Midian,ºº
Zebahº
and Zalmunna,º
and discomfitedºº
allº
the host.º |
 8:13 ¶
And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres. |
|
 8:13 ¶
And Gideonº
the sonº

battleº

the sunº

And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men. |
|
 8:14
And caughtºº
a young manº
of the menººº
of Succoth,º
and enquiredºº
of him: and he describedºº
untoº
himº
the princesº
of Succoth,º
and the eldersº
thereof, [even] threescore and seventeenºº
men.º |
 8:15
And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary? |
|
 8:15
And he cameºº
untoº
the menºº
of Succoth,º
and said,ºº
Beholdº
Zebahº
and Zalmunna,º
with whomº
ye did upbraidºº
me, saying,ºº
[Are] the handsº
of Zebahº
and Zalmunnaº
nowº
in thine hand,º
thatº
we should giveºº
breadº
unto thy menºº
[that are] weary?º |
 8:16
And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth. |
|
 8:16
And he tookººº
the eldersº
of the city,º
and thornsº

Then saidºº
he untoº
Zebahº
and Zalmunna,º
Whatº
mannerº
of menºº
[were they] whomº
ye slewºº
at Tabor?º
And they answered,ºº
As thouº
[art], so [were] they; each oneº
resembledº
the childrenº
of a king.º |
 8:19
And he said, They were my brethren, the sons of my mother: as Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you. |
|
 8:19
And he said,ºº
Theyº
[were] my brethren,º
[even] the sonsº
of my mother:º
[as] the LORDº
liveth,º
ifº
ye had saved them alive,ººº
I would notº
slayºº
you. |
 8:20
And he said unto Jether his first-born, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth. |
|
 8:20
And he saidºº
unto Jetherº
his firstborn,º
Up,ºº
[and] slayºº
them. But the youthº
drewºº
notº
his sword:º
forº
he feared,ºº
becauseº
he [was] yetº
a youth.º |
 8:21
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels' necks. |
|
 8:21
Then Zebahº
and Zalmunnaº
said,ºº
Riseºº
thou,º
and fallºº
upon us: forº
as the manº
[is, so is] his strength.º
And Gideonº
arose,ºº
and slewººº
Zebahº
and Zalmunna,º
and took awayººº
the ornamentsº
thatº
[were] on their camels'º
necks.º |
 8:22 ¶
Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also; for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Midian. |
|
 8:22 ¶
Then the menº
of Israelº
saidºº
untoº
Gideon,º
Ruleºº
thou over us, bothº
thou,º
andº
thy son,º
and thy son'sº
sonº
also:º
forº
thou hast deliveredºº
us from the handºº
of Midian.º |
 8:23
And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Jehovah shall rule over you. |
|
 8:23
And Gideonº
saidºº
untoº
them, Iº
will notº
ruleºº
over you, neitherº
shall my sonº
ruleºº
over you: the LORDº
shall ruleºº
over you. |
 8:24 ¶
And Gideon said unto them, I would make a request of you, that ye would give me every man the ear-rings of his spoil. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.) |
|
 8:24 ¶
And Gideonº
saidºº
untoº
them, I would desireºº
a requestº
ofº
you, that ye would giveºº
me every manº
the earringsº
of his prey.º
(Forº
they had goldenº
earrings,º
becauseº
theyº
[were] Ishmaelites.)º |
 8:25
And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the ear-rings of his spoil. |
|
 8:25
And they answered,ºº
We will willinglyºº
giveºº
[them]. And they spreadººº
a garment,º
and did castºº
thereinº
every manº
the earringsº
of his prey.º |
 8:26
And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks. |
|
 8:26
And the weightº
of the goldenº
earringsº
thatº
he requestedºº
wasº
a thousandº
and sevenº
hundredº
[shekels] of gold;º
besideºº
ornaments,º
and collars,º
and purpleº
raimentº
that [was] onºº
the kingsº
of Midian,º
and besideºº
the chainsº
thatº
[were] about their camels'º
necks.º |
 8:27
And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel played the harlot after it there; and it became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house. |
|
 8:27
And Gideonº
madeºº
an ephodº
thereof, and putºº
it in his city,º
[even] in Ophrah:º
and allº
Israelº
went thither a whoringººº
afterº
it: which thing becameº
a snareº
unto Gideon,º
and to his house.º |
 8:28 ¶
So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon. |
|
 8:28 ¶
Thus was Midianº
subduedºº
beforeº
the childrenº
of Israel,º
so that they lifted upºº
their headsº
noº
more.ºº
And the countryº
was in quietnessºº
fortyº
yearsº
in the daysº
of Gideon.º |
 8:29 ¶
And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. |
|
 8:29 ¶
And Jerubbaalº
the sonº
of Joashº
wentººº
and dweltºº
in his own house.º |
 8:30
And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten; for he had many wives. |
|
 8:30
And Gideonº
hadº
threescore and tenº
sonsº
of his bodyº
begotten:ºº
forº
he hadº
manyº
wives.º |
 8:31
And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, and he called his name Abimelech. |
|
 8:31
And his concubineº
thatº
[was] in Shechem,º
sheº
alsoº
bareºº
him a son,ºº
whose nameº
he calledºº
Abimelech.º |
 8:32 ¶
And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. |

 8:33
And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the harlot after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god. |
|
 8:33
And it came to pass,º
as soon asº
Gideonº
was dead,ºº
that the childrenº
of Israelº
turned again,ºº
and went a whoringºº
afterº
Baalim,º
and madeºº
Baalberithº
their god.º |
 8:34
And the children of Israel remembered not Jehovah their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side; |
|
 8:34
And the childrenº
of Israelº
rememberedºº
notºº
the LORDº
their God,º
who had deliveredººº
them out of the handsºº
of allº
their enemiesºº
on every side:ºº |
 8:35
neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, [who is] Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel. |
|
 8:35
Neitherº
shewedºº
they kindnessº
toº
the houseº
of Jerubbaal,º
[namely], Gideon,º
according to allº
the goodnessº
whichº
he had shewedºº
untoº
Israel.º |
