- Shechem:
- As it is immediately added, that "they presented themselves before God," which is supposed to mean at the tabernacle; some are of opinion that Joshua caused it to be conveyed from Shiloh to Shechem on this occasion, to give the greater solemnity to his last meeting with the people. The Vatican and Alexandrian copies of the Septuagint, however, read Σηλω, both here and in "So Joshuaª madeª° a covenantª with the peopleª that¹ day,ª and setª° them a statuteª and an ordinanceª in Shechem.ª" {Jsh 24:25}; which many suppose to have been the original reading. Dr. Shuckford supposes that the covenant was made at Shechem, and that the people went to Shiloh to confirm it. But the most probable opinion seems to be that of Dr. Kennicott, that when all the tribes were assembled as Shechem, Joshua called the chiefs to him on that mount, which had before been consecrated by the law, and by the altar which he had erected. "And Abramª passed throughª° the landª unto¹ the placeª of Sichem,ª unto¹ the plainª of Moreh.ª And the Canaaniteª [was] thenª in the land.ª" {Gen 12:6} + "And Jacobª cameª° to Shalem,²¹ a cityª of Shechem,ª which¹ [is] in the landª of Canaan,ª when he cameª° from Padanaram;ª¹ and pitched his tentª°¹ beforeª the city.ª ... And he boughtª°¹ a parcelª of a field,ª where¹¹ he had spreadª° his tent,ª at the handª¹ of the childrenª of Hamor,ª Shechem's²¹ father,ª for an hundredª pieces of money.ª" {Gen 33:18-19} + "And they gaveª° unto¹ Jacobª¹ all¹ the strangeª godsª which¹ [were] in their hand,ª and [all their] earringsª which¹ [were] in their ears;ª and Jacobª hidª° them under¹ the oakª which¹ [was] by¹ Shechem.ª" {Gen 35:4} + "And Abimelechª the sonª of Jerubbaalª went²°¹ to Shechemª unto¹ his mother'sª brethren,ª and communedª° with¹ them, and with¹ all¹ the familyª of the houseª of his mother'sª father,ª saying,ª° ... And his mother'sª brethrenª spakeª° of¹ him in the earsª of all¹ the menª of Shechemª¹ all¹ these¹ words:ª and their heartsª inclined²° to followª¹ Abimelech;ª for¹ they said,ª° He¹ [is] our brother.ª" {Jdg 9:1-3} + "And Rehoboamª went²°¹ to Shechem:ª for¹ all¹ Israelª were comeª° to Shechemª to make him king.ª°¹" {1Kg 12:1}
