Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Herebyªª perceive¹ we²° the¹ loveª [of God],¹ becauseª heª laid downª° his²¹ lifeª forª us:ª andª weª oughtª° to lay downª° [our] livesª forª the¹ brethren.ª

Herebyªª perceiue¹ wee²° the¹ loueª of God,¹ becauseª heª layd downeª° his²¹ lifeª forª vs,ª andª weeª oughtª° to lay downeª° our liuesª forª the¹ brethren.ª

In this we know His love toward us, that he gave himself for us; (so) also it is right for us for the sake of our brethren to give ourselves.

By this we know his love towards us, because he gave up his life for us:. and we also ought to give up our lives for our brethren.

Ἐν τούτῳ ἐγνώκαμεν τὴν ἀγάπην, ὅτι ἐκεῖνος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἔθηκεν: καὶ ἡμεῖς ὀφείλομεν ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀδελφῶν τὰς ψυχὰς θεῖναι.
