"And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ Moses,ª Go onª° beforeª the people,ª and takeª° with¹ thee of the eldersª¹ of Israel;ª and thy rod,ª wherewith¹ thou smotestª°¹ the river,ª takeª° in thine hand,ª and go.ª° ... all the waters:
As the Nile was held sacred by the Egyptians, as well as the animals it contained, to which they annually sacrificed a girl, or as others say, both a boy and girl, God might have designed this plague as a punishment for such idolatry and cruelty; and to shew them the baseness of those elements which they reverenced, and the insufficiency of the gods in which they trusted. All the punishments brought upon them bore a strict analogy to their crimes. "Thus¹ saithª° the LORD,ª In this¹ thou shalt knowª° that¹ I¹ [am] the LORD:ª behold,¹ I¹ will smiteª° with the rodª that¹ [is] in mine handª upon¹ the watersª which¹ [are] in the river,ª and they shall be turnedª° to blood.ª ...
