Israel:
i.e. a prince of God
as a prince:
Or, according to the LXX, Vulgate, Houbigant, Dathe, and Rosenmuller, "because thou hast power with God, thou shalt also prevail with men." There is a beautiful antithesis between the two terms, with אלהים, Elohim, God, the Almighty, with אנשׁים, anashim, weak, feeble men, as the word imports; seeing thou hast had power with the Almighty, surely thou shalt prevail over perishing mortals.
power:
"And Jacobª was leftª° alone;¹ and there wrestledª° a manª with¹ him until¹ the breakingª° of the day.ª" {Gen 32:24} + "He took his brother² by the heelª°¹¹ in the womb,ª and by his strengthª he had powerª° with¹ God:ª ... Even the LORDª Godª of hosts;ª the LORDª [is] his memorial.ª" {Hsa 12:3-5}
with men:

And he said,ª° Is not he rightlyª namedªª° Jacob?ª for he hath supplanted¹ me²° theseª two times:ª he took awayª°¹ my birthright;ª and, behold,¹ now¹ he hath taken awayª° my blessing.ª And he said,ª° Hast thou not¹ reservedª° a blessingª for me?" {Gen 27:33-36} + "And Godª cameª° to¹ Labanª the Syrianª in a dreamª by night,ª and saidª° unto him, Take heedª° that¹ thou speakª° not toª Jacobª either goodª¹ orª bad.ª" {Gen 31:24} + "And Jacobª was wroth,ª° and chodeª° with Laban:ª and Jacobª answeredª° and saidª° to Laban,ª What¹ [is] my trespass?ª what¹ [is] my sin,ª that¹ thou hast so hotly pursuedª° after¹ me?² ...
