Nehemiah 8

1 The religious manner of reading and hearing the Law. 9 They comfort the people. 13 The forwardness of them to hear and be instructed. 16 They keep the feast of the Tabernacles.

 8:1 And all 3605 the people 5971a gathered 622 as one 259 man 376 at the square 7339 which 834 was in front 6440 of the Water 4325 Gate 8179, and they asked 559 Ezra 5830 the scribe 5613b to bring 935 the book 5612 of the law 8451 of Moses 4872 which 834 the LORD 3068 had given 6680 to Israel 3478.

 8:2 Then Ezra 5830 the priest 3548 brought 935 the law 8451 before 6440 the assembly 6951 of men 376, women 802 and all 3605 who [could] listen 8085 with understanding 995, on the first 259 day 3117 of the seventh 7637 month 2320.

 8:3 He read 7121 from it before 6440 the square 7339 which 834 was in front 6440 of the Water 4325 Gate 8179 from early 216 morning 216 until 5704 midday 4276 3117, in the presence 5048 of men 376 and women 802, those who could understand 995; and all 3605 the people 5971a were attentive 241 to the book 5612 of the law 8451.

 8:4 Ezra 5830 the scribe 5613b stood 5975 at a wooden 6086 podium 4026 which 834 they had made 6213a for the purpose 1697. And beside 681a him stood 5975 Mattithiah 4993, Shema 8087b, Anaiah 6043, Uriah 223a, Hilkiah 2518, and Maaseiah 4641 on his right 3225 hand 3225; and Pedaiah 6305, Mishael 4332, Malchijah 4441, Hashum 2828, Hashbaddanah 2806, Zechariah 2148a [and] Meshullam 4918 on his left 8040 hand 8040.

 8:5 Ezra 5830 opened 6605a the book 5612 in the sight 5869 of all 3605 the people 5971a for he was standing above 4480 5921 all 3605 the people 5971a; and when he opened 6605a it, all 3605 the people 5971a stood 5975 up.

 8:6 Then Ezra 5830 blessed 1288 the LORD 3068 the great 1419 God 430. And all 3605 the people 5971a answered 6030a, “Amen 543, Amen 543!” while lifting 4607 up their hands 3027; then they bowed 6915 low 6915 and worshiped 7812 the LORD 3068 with [their] faces 639 to the ground 776.

 8:7 Also Jeshua 3091, Bani 1137, Sherebiah 8274, Jamin 3226, Akkub 6126, Shabbethai 7678, Hodiah 1941, Maaseiah 4641, Kelita 7042, Azariah 5838, Jozabad 3107, Hanan 2605, Pelaiah 6384b, the Levites 3881, explained 995 the law 8451 to the people 5971a while the people 5971a [remained] in their place 5977.

 8:8 They read 7121 from the book 5612, from the law 8451 of God 430, translating 6567a to give 7760 the sense 7922 so that they understood 995 the reading 4744.

 8:9 ¶ Then Nehemiah 5166, who 1931 was the governor 8660, and Ezra 5830 the priest 3548 [and] scribe 5613b, and the Levites 3881 who taught 995 the people 5971a said 559 to all 3605 the people 5971a, “This 1931 day 3117 is holy 6918 to the LORD 3068 your God 430; do not mourn 56 or weep 1058.” For all 3605 the people 5971a were weeping 1058 when they heard 8085 the words 1697 of the law 8451.

 8:10 Then he said 559 to them, “Go 1980, eat 398 of the fat 4924b, drink 8354 of the sweet 4477, and send 7971 portions 4490 to him who has nothing 369 prepared 3559; for this day 3117 is holy 6918 to our Lord 136. Do not be grieved 6087a, for the joy 2304 of the LORD 3068 is your strength 4581.”

 8:11 So the Levites 3881 calmed 2814 all 3605 the people 5971a, saying 559, “Be still 2013, for the day 3117 is holy 6918; do not be grieved 6087a.”

 8:12 All 3605 the people 5971a went 1980 away to eat 398, to drink 8354, to send 7971 portions 4490 and to celebrate 6213a a great 1419 festival 8057, because 3588 they understood 995 the words 1697 which 834 had been made 3045 known 3045 to them.

 8:13 ¶ Then on the second 8145 day 3117 the heads 7218 of fathers’ 1 [households] of all 3605 the people 5971a, the priests 3548 and the Levites 3881 were gathered 622 to Ezra 5830 the scribe 5613b that they might gain 7919a insight 7919a into the words 1697 of the law 8451.

 8:14 They found 4672 written 3789 in the law 8451 how 834 the LORD 3068 had commanded 6680 through 3027 Moses 4872 that the sons 1121 of Israel 3478 should live 3427 in booths 5521 during the feast 2282 of the seventh 7637 month 2320.

 8:15 So they proclaimed 8085 and circulated 5674a a proclamation 6963 in all 3605 their cities 5892b and in Jerusalem 3389, saying 559, “Go 3318 out to the hills 2022, and bring 935 olive 2132 branches 5929 and wild 6086 8081 olive 8081 branches 5929, myrtle 1918 branches 5929, palm 8558 branches 5929 and branches 5929 of [other] leafy 5687 trees 6086, to make 6213a booths 5521, as it is written 3789.”

 8:16 So the people 5971a went 3318 out and brought 935 [them] and made 6213a booths 5521 for themselves, each 376 on his roof 1406, and in their courts 2691a and in the courts 2691a of the house 1004 of God 430, and in the square 7339 at the Water 4325 Gate 8179 and in the square 7339 at the Gate 8179 of Ephraim 669.

 8:17 The entire 3605 assembly 6951 of those who had returned 7725 from the captivity 7628b made 6213a booths 5521 and lived 3427 in them. The sons 1121 of Israel 3478 had indeed 3588 not done 6213a so 3651 from the days 3117 of Joshua 3091 the son 1121 of Nun 5126 to that day 3117. And there was great 1419 rejoicing 8057.

 8:18 He read 7121 from the book 5612 of the law 8451 of God 430 daily 3117, from the first 7223 day 3117 to the last 314 day 3117. And they celebrated 6213a the feast 2282 seven 7651 days 3117, and on the eighth 8066 day 3117 [there was] a solemn 6116 assembly 6116 according to the ordinance 4941.
