 8:1 ¶
And the seventh month arrived, and the children of Israel [were settled] in their cities; and all the people were gathered as one man to the broad place before the water-gate, and they told Ezra{gr.Esdras} the scribe to bring the book of the law of Mosheh{gr.Moses}, which the Lord commanded Israel. |
|
 8:1 ¶
And allº
the peopleº
gathered themselves togetherºº
as oneº
manº
intoº
the streetº
thatº
[was] beforeº
the waterº
gate;º
and they spakeºº
unto Ezraº
the scribeºº
to bringººº
the bookº
of the lawº
of Moses,º
whichº
Yahwehº
had commandedºº
toº
Israel.º |
 8:2
So Ezra{gr.Esdras} the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and every one who had understanding [was present] to hearken, on the first day of the seventh month. |
|
 8:2
And Ezraº
the priestº
broughtººº
the lawº
beforeº
the congregationº
both of menºº
and women,º
and allº
that could hearºº
with understanding,ºº
upon the firstº
dayº
of the seventhº
month.º |
 8:3
And he read in it from the time of sun-rise to the middle of the day, before the men and the women; and they understood [it], and the ears of all the people [were attentive] to the book of the law. |
|
 8:3
And he readºº
therein beforeº
the streetº
thatº
[was] beforeº
the waterº
gateº
fromº
the morningº
untilº
midday,ºº
beforeº
the menºº
and the women,º
and those that could understand;ºº
and the earsº
of allº
the peopleº
[were attentive] untoº
the bookº
of the law.º |
 8:4
And Ezra{gr.Esdras} the scribe stood on a wooden stage, and there stood next to him Mattathias, and Shemaiah{gr.Samaeas}, and Hananiah{gr.Ananias}, and Uriah{gr.Urias}, and Chelcia, and Massia, on his right hand; and on his left Pedaiah{gr.Phadaeas}, and Mishael{gr.Misael}, and Melchiah{gr.Melchias}, and Husham{gr.Asom}, and Asabadma, and Zechariah{gr.Zacharias}, and Meshullam{gr.Mesollam}. |
|
 8:4
And Ezraº
the scribeºº
stoodºº
uponº
a pulpitº
of wood,º
whichº
they had madeºº
for the purpose;º
and besideº
him stoodºº
Mattithiah,º
and Shema,º
and Anaiah,º
and Urijah,º
and Hilkiah,º
and Maaseiah,º
onº
his right hand;º
and on his left hand,ºº
Pedaiah,º
and Mishael,º
and Malchiah,º
and Hashum,º
and Hashbadana,º
Zechariah,º
[and] Meshullam.º |
 8:5
And Ezra{gr.Esdras} opened the book before all the people, for he was above the people; and it came to pass when he had opened it, [that] all the people stood. |
|
 8:5
And Ezraº
openedºº
the bookº
in the sightº
of allº
the people;º
(forº
he wasº
aboveºº
allº
the people;)º
and when he openedºº
it, allº
the peopleº
stood up:ºº |
 8:6
And Ezra{gr.Esdras} blessed the Lord, the great God: and all the people answered, and said, Amen, lifting up their hands: and they bowed down and worshipped the Lord with their face to the ground. |
|
 8:6
And Ezraº
blessedººº
Yahweh,º
the greatº
Elohim.º
And allº
the peopleº
answered,ºº
Amen,º
Amen,º
with lifting upº
their hands:º
and they bowedºº
their heads, and worshippedºº
Yahwehº
with [their] facesº
to the ground.º |
 8:7
And Jeshua{gr.Jesus} and Benaiah{gr.Banaias} and Sarabias instructed the people in the law, and the people [stood] in their place. |
|
 8:7
Also Jeshua,º
and Bani,º
and Sherebiah,º
Jamin,º
Akkub,º
Shabbethai,º
Hodijah,º
Maaseiah,º
Kelita,º
Azariah,º
Jozabad,º
Hanan,º
Pelaiah,º
and the Levites,º
causedº
the peopleº
to understandºº
the law:º
and the peopleº
[stood] inº
their place.º |
 8:8
And they read in the book of the law of God, and Ezra{gr.Esdras} taught, and instructed them distinctly in the knowledge of the Lord, and the people understood [the law] in the reading. |
|
 8:8
So they readºº
in the bookº
in the lawº
of Elohimº
distinctly,ºº
and gaveºº
the sense,º
and caused [them] to understandºº
the reading.º |
 8:9 ¶
And Nehemiah{gr.Neemias}, and Ezra{gr.Esdras} the priest and scribe, and the Levites, and they that instructed the people, spoke and said to all the people, It is a holy day to the Lord our God; do not mourn, nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. |
|
 8:9 ¶
And Nehemiah,º
whichº
[is] the Tirshatha,º
and Ezraº
the priestº
the scribe,ºº
and the Levitesº
that taughtººº
the people,º
saidºº
unto allº
the people,º
Thisº
dayº
[is] holyº
unto Yahwehº
your Elohim;º
mournºº
not,º
norº
weep.ºº
Forº
allº
the peopleº
wept,ºº
when they heardººº
the wordsº
of the law.º |
 8:10
And [the governor] said to them, Go, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions to them that have nothing; for the day is holy to our Lord: and faint not, for the Lord is our strength. |
|
 8:10
Then he saidºº
unto them, Goº
your way,ºº
eatºº
the fat,º
and drinkºº
the sweet,º
and sendºº
portionsº
unto them for whom nothingº
is prepared:ºº
forº
[this] dayº
[is] holyº
unto our Adonim:º
neitherº
be ye sorry;ºº
forº
the joyº
of Yahwehº
is your strength.º |
 8:11
And the Levites caused all the people to be silent, saying, Be silent, for [it is] a holy day, and despond not. |
|
 8:11
So the Levitesº
stilledºº
allº
the people,º
saying,ºº
Hold your peace,ºº
forº
the dayº
[is] holy;º
neitherº
be ye grieved.ºº |
 8:12
So all the people departed to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, for they understood the words which he made known to them. |
|
 8:12
And allº
the peopleº
wentº
their wayºº
to eat,ºº
and to drink,ºº
and to sendºº
portions,º
and to makeºº
greatº
mirth,º
becauseº
they had understoodºº
the wordsº
thatº
were declaredºº
unto them. |
 8:13 ¶
And on the second day the heads of families assembled with all the people, [also] the priests and Levites, to Ezra{gr.Esdras} the scribe, to attend to all the words of the law. |
|
 8:13 ¶
And on the secondº
dayº
were gathered togetherºº
the chiefº
of the fathersº
of allº
the people,º
the priests,º
and the Levites,º
untoº
Ezraº
the scribe,ºº
even to understandººº
the wordsº
of the law.º |
 8:14
And they found written in the law which the Lord commanded Mosheh{gr.Moses}, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths, in the feast in the seventh month: |
|
 8:14
And they foundºº
writtenºº
in the lawº
whichº
Yahwehº
had commandedºº
byº
Moses,º
thatº
the childrenº
of Israelº
should dwellºº
in boothsº
in the feastº
of the seventhº
month:º |
 8:15
and that they should sound with trumpets in all their cities, and in Jerusalem. And Ezra{gr.Esdras} said, Go forth to the mountain, and bring branches of olive, and branches of cypress trees, and branches of myrtle, and branches of palm trees, and branches of [every] thick tree, to make booths, according to that which was written. |
|
 8:15
And thatº
they should publishºº
and proclaimººº
in allº
their cities,º
and in Jerusalem,º
saying,ºº
Go forthºº
unto the mount,º
and fetchºº
oliveº
branches,º
and pineºº
branches,ºº
and myrtleº
branches,º
and palmº
branches,º
and branchesº
of thickº
trees,º
to makeºº
booths,º
as [it is] written.ºº |
 8:16 ¶
And the people went forth, and brought [them], and made booths for themselves, each one upon his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the streets of the city, and as far as the gate of Ephraim. |
|
 8:16 ¶
So the peopleº
went forth,ºº
and broughtºº
[them], and madeºº
themselves booths,º
every oneº
uponº
the roof of his house,º
and in their courts,º
and in the courtsº
of the houseº
of Elohim,º
and in the streetº
of the waterº
gate,º
and in the streetº
of the gateº
of Ephraim.º |
 8:17
And all the congregation who had returned from the captivity, made booths, and dwelt in booths: for the children of Israel [had] not done so from the days of Jeshua{gr.Jesus} the son of Nun{gr.Naue} until that day: and there was great joy. |
|
 8:17
And allº
the congregationº
of them that were come againºº
out ofº
the captivityº
madeºº
booths,º
and satºº
under the booths:º
forº
since the daysºº
of Jeshuaº
the sonº
of Nunº
untoº
thatº
dayº
had notº
the childrenº
of Israelº
doneº
so.ººº
And there wasº
veryº
greatº
gladness.º |
 8:18
And [Ezra{gr.Esdras}] read in the book of the law of God daily, from the first day even to the last day: and they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance. |
|
 8:18
Also dayº
by day,º
fromº
the firstº
dayº
untoº
the lastº
day,º
he readºº
in the bookº
of the lawº
of Elohim.º
And they keptºº
the feastº
sevenº
days;º
and on the eighthº
dayº
[was] a solemn assembly,º
according unto the manner.º |
