- Of the two burying-places of the patriarchs, one was at Hebron, the cave and field which Abraham purchased of Ephron the Hittite ("And Abrahamª hearkenedª° unto¹ Ephron;ª and Abrahamª weighedª° to Ephronª¹ the silver,ª which¹ he had namedª° in the audienceª of the sonsª of Heth,ª fourª hundredª shekelsª of silver,ª currentª° [money] with the merchant.ª°" {Gen 23:16}, etc.); the other in Sychem, which Jacob (not Abraham) bought of the sons of Emmor ("And he boughtª°¹ a parcelª of a field,ª where¹¹ he had spreadª° his tent,ª at the handª¹ of the childrenª of Hamor,ª Shechem's²¹ father,ª for an hundredª pieces of money.ª" {Gen 33:19}). To remove this glaring discrepancy, Markland interprets παρα [Strong's G3844], from, as it frequently signifies with a genitive, and renders, "And were carried over to Sychem; and afterwards from among the descendants of Emmor, the father, or son, of Sychem, they were laid in the sepulchre which Abraham bought for a sum of money." This agrees with the account which Josephus gives of the patriarchs; that they were carried out of Egypt, first to Sychem, and then to Hebron, where they were buried. "And Mosesª tookª°¹ the bonesª of Josephª with¹ him: for¹ he had straitly²° swornª°¹ the childrenª of Israel,ª saying,ª° Godª will surely²° visitª° you; and ye shall carry up²° my bones² awayª°¹¹ hence¹¹ with¹ you." {Exd 13:19} + "And the bonesª of Joseph,ª which¹ the childrenª of Israelª brought upª° out of Egypt,ª¹ buriedª° they in Shechem,ª in a parcelª of groundª which¹ Jacobª boughtª° of¹¹ the sonsª of Hamorª the fatherª of Shechem²¹ for an hundredª pieces of silver:ª and it became¹ the inheritanceª of the childrenª of Joseph.ª" {Jsh 24:32}
