- Mary Magdalene, as well as Peter, was evidently at the sepulchre twice on that morning of the resurrection. The first time of her going was some short time before her companions, the other Mary and Salome ("In the endª² of the sabbath,ª as it began to dawnª° towardª the firstª [day] of the week,ª cameª° Maryª Magdaleneª andª the¹ otherª Maryª to seeª° the¹ sepulchre.ª" {Mtt 28:1}); and observing that the stone had been removed, she returned to inform Peter and John. In the meantime, the other Mary and Salome came to the sepulchre, and saw the angel, as recorded by Matthew and Mark. While these women returned to the city, Peter and John went to the sepulchre, passing them at some distance, or going another way, followed by Mary Magdalene, who stayed after their return. This was her second journey; when she saw two angels, and then Jesus himself, as here related; and immediately after Jesus appeared to the other women, as they returned to the city ("Andª asª they wentª° to tellª° hisª disciples,ª² behold,ª°¹ Jesusª metª° them,ª saying,ª° All hail.ª° Andª they¹ cameª° and heldª° himª by the¹ feet,ª andª worshippedª° him.ª ... Thenª saidª° Jesusª unto them,ª Be²° not² afraid:ª°¹ go²°¹ tellª° myª brethrenª thatª they go²°¹ intoª Galilee,ª and thereª shall they seeª° me.ª" {Mtt 28:9-10}). In the meantime Joanna and her company arrived at the sepulchre, when two angels appeared to them, and addressed them as the one angel had done the other women ("Nowª upon the¹ firstª [day] of the¹ week,ª very early in the morning,ªª they cameª° untoª the¹ sepulchre,ª bringingª° the spicesª whichª they had prepared,ª° andª certainª [others] withª them.ª ...ª It wasª° Maryª Magdalene,ª andª Joanna,ª andª Maryª [the mother] of James,ª andª otherª [women that were] withª them,ª whichª toldª° these thingsª untoª the¹ apostles.ª" {Lke 24:1-10}). They immediately returned to the city, and by some means found the apostles before the others arrived, and informed them of what they had seen; upon which Peter went a second time to the sepulchre, but saw only the linen clothes lying ("Thenª aroseª° Peter,ª and ranª° untoª the¹ sepulchre;ª andª stooping down,ª° he beheldª° the¹ linen clothesª laidª° by themselves,ª andª departed,ª° wonderingª° inª himselfª at that which was come to pass.ª°" {Lke 24:12}). "In the endª² of the sabbath,ª as it began to dawnª° towardª the firstª [day] of the week,ª cameª° Maryª Magdaleneª andª the¹ otherª Maryª to seeª° the¹ sepulchre.ª ... Thenª saidª° Jesusª unto them,ª Be²° not² afraid:ª°¹ go²°¹ tellª° myª brethrenª thatª they go²°¹ intoª Galilee,ª and thereª shall they seeª° me.ª" {Mtt 28:1-10} + "Andª when²° the¹ sabbathª was past,ª° Maryª Magdalene,ª andª Maryª the¹ [mother]² of James,ª andª Salome,ª had boughtª° sweet spices,ª thatª they might comeª° and anointª° him.ª ... Andª veryª early in the morningª the¹ firstª [day] of the¹ week,ª they cameª° untoª the¹ sepulchreª at the risingª° of the¹ sun.ª" {Mrk 16:1-2} + "Nowª when [Jesus] was risenª° earlyª the firstª [day] of the week,ª he appearedª° firstª to Maryª Magdalene,ª out ofª whomª he had castª° sevenª devils.ª" {Mrk 16:9} + "Nowª upon the¹ firstª [day] of the¹ week,ª very early in the morning,ªª they cameª° untoª the¹ sepulchre,ª bringingª° the spicesª whichª they had prepared,ª° andª certainª [others] withª them.ª ...ª It wasª° Maryª Magdalene,ª andª Joanna,ª andª Maryª [the mother] of James,ª andª otherª [women that were] withª them,ª whichª toldª° these thingsª untoª the¹ apostles.ª" {Lke 24:1-10}
