{Judges 12:6} Then said 559 z8799 they unto him, Say 559 z8798 now x4994 Shibboleth: 7641 and he said 559 z8799 Sibboleth: 5451 for he could not x3808 frame 3559 z0 to pronounce 1696 z8763 [it] right. y3559 z8686 x3651 Then they took 270 z8799 him, and slew 7819 z8799 him at x413 the passages 4569 of Jordan: 3383 and there fell 5307 z8799 at that x1931 time 6256 of the Ephraimites 669 x4480 forty 705 and two 8147 thousand. 505
Say now:
"Andª afterª a whileª came¹ unto [him] they²° that stood by,ª° and saidª° to Peter,ª Surelyª thouª alsoª artª° [one] ofª them;ª forª² thyª speechª bewrayethª¹ thee.ª²°" {Mtt 26:73} + "Andª he¹ denied¹ it²° again.ª Andª a littleª after,ª they that stood byª° saidª° againª to Peter,ª Surelyª thou artª° [one] ofª them:ª forª² thou¹ artª° a Galilaean,ª andª thyª speechª agreethª° [thereto]." {Mrk 14:70}
Shibboleth:
which signifieth a stream, or flood, "I sinkª° in deepª mire,ª where [there is] no¹ standing:ª I am comeª° into deepª waters,ª where the floodsª overflowª° me." {Psa 69:2} + "Let not¹ the waterfloodªª overflowª° me, neither¹ let the deepª swallow me up,ª° and let not¹ the pitª shutª° her mouthª upon¹ me." {Psa 69:15} + "And it shall come to pass¹ in that¹ day,ª [that] the LORDª shall beat offª° from the channelª¹ of the riverª unto¹ the streamª of Egypt,ª and ye¹ shall be gatheredª° oneª by one,ª O ye childrenª of Israel.ª" {Isa 27:12} *Heb: Shibboleth also means an ear of corn ("They are exaltedª° for a little while,ª but are gone¹ and brought low;ª° they are taken out²° of the way²¹ as all¹ [other], and cut offª° as the topsª of the ears of corn.ª" {Job 24:24}), and sibboleth signifies a burden ("Whereforeª sayª° unto the childrenª of Israel,ª I¹ [am] the LORD,ª and I will bring²° you out¹¹ from under¹¹ the burdensª of the Egyptians,ª and I will ridª° you out of their bondage,ª¹ and I will redeemª° you with a stretched²° out¹ arm,ª and with greatª judgments:ª" {Exd 6:6}); and a heavy burden they were obliged to bear who could not pronounce this test letter. It is well known that several nations cannot pronounce certain letters. The sound of th cannot be pronounced by the Persians, no more than by some of our Continental neighbours; though it is a common sound among the Arabians. To this day, many of the German Jews cannot articulate ת th, for which they substitute ss; thus for baith, a house, they say baiss.
there fell:
"The beginningª of strifeª [is as] when one letteth outª° water:ª therefore leave offª° contention,ª beforeª it be meddled²° with.¹" {Prv 17:14} + "A brotherª offendedª° [is harder to be won] than a strongª city:ª¹ and [their] contentionsª°² [are] like the barsª of a castle.ª" {Prv 18:19} + "The wordsª of a wise man'sª mouthª [are] gracious;ª but the lipsª of a foolª will swallow upª° himself." {Ecc 10:12} + "Andª Jesusª knewª° theirª thoughts,ª and saidª° unto them,ª Everyª kingdomª dividedª° againstª itselfª is brought to desolation;ª° andª everyª cityª orª houseª dividedª° againstª itselfª shall²° notª stand:ª°" {Mtt 12:25} + "Butª ifª ye biteª° andª devourª° one another,ª take heedª° that ye be²° notª consumedª° one²° of² another.ª" {Gal 5:15}
forty:
Arbaim ooshenayim aleph, "forty and two thousand." Here the ו, and, may mean simple addition; and this number may denote 2,040 and not 42,000. At the last census of the Israelites ("These¹ [are] the familiesª of the sonsª of Ephraimª according to those that were numberedª° of them, thirtyª and twoª thousandª and fiveª hundred.ª These¹ [are] the sonsª of Josephª after their families.ª" {Num 26:37}) the whole tribe of Ephraim only amounted to 32,500, compared with which this last number appears far too great.
