- an harlot:
- Probably zonah should be rendered as in "And Joshuaª the sonª of Nunª sentª° out of¹ Shittimª twoª men²¹ to spyª° secretly,ª saying,ª° Go²°¹ viewª°¹ the land,ª even Jericho.ª And they went,²°¹ and came²° into¹ an harlot'sª°¹ house,ª² namedª Rahab,ª and lodgedª° there.¹" {Jsh 2:1}, a hostess, or inn-keeper, so Targum of Jonathan, wehoo bar ittetha pundekeetha, "and he was the son of a woman, a tavern-keeper." She was very probably a Canaanite, as she is called, "And Gilead'sª wifeª bareª° him sons;ª and his wife'sª sonsª grew up,ª° and they thrust outª°¹ Jephthah,ª and saidª° unto him, Thou shalt not¹ inheritª° in our father'sª house;ª for¹ thou¹ [art] the sonª of a strangeª woman.ª" {Jdg 11:2}, a strange woman, ishah achereth, "a woman of another race;" and on this account his brethren drove him from the family, as not having a full right to the inheritance.
