thou shouldest:
"The LORDª our Godª madeª ° a covenantª with¹ us in Horeb.ª ... The LORDª madeª ° not¹ ¹ this¹ covenantª with¹ our fathers,ª but¹ with¹ us,² [even] us,¹ who¹ [are] all¹ of us² here¹ aliveª this day.ª" {Deu 5:2-3} + "Now¹ therefore, if¹ ye will obey² ° my voice² indeed,ª °¹ and keepª °¹ my covenant,ª then ye shall be¹ a peculiar treasureª unto me above all¹ ¹ people:ª for¹ all¹ the earthª [is] mine: ... Heb. pass, This is an allusion to the solemn ceremony used by several ancient nations, when they entered into a covenant with each other. The victims, slain as a sacrifice on this occasion, were divided, and and parts laid asunder. The contracting parties then passed between them, imprecating, as a curse on those who violated the sacred compact, that they might in like manner be cut asunder ("And he tookª ° unto him¹ all¹ these,¹ and dividedª ° them in the midst,ª and laidª ° eachª pieceª one againstª ° another:ª but the birdsª dividedª ° he not.¹" {Gen 15:10}). St. Cyril, in his work against Julian, shows that passing between the divided parts of a victim was used also among the Chaldeans and other people.

"Neither¹ with¹ you only¹ do I¹ makeª °¹ this¹ covenantª and this¹ oath;ª" {Deu 29:14} + "And they enteredª ° into a covenantª to seekª °¹ the LORDª Godª of their fathersª with all¹ their heartª and with all¹ their soul;ª ...
