- Kadesh:
- This Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin, is different from Kadesh-barnea, lying in, or adjoining to the wilderness of Paran, about eight leagues south of Hebron. (See note on "Then your southª quarterª shall be¹ from the wildernessª¹ of Zinª along by¹ the coastª of Edom,ª and your southª borderª shall be¹ the outmost coastª¹ of the saltª seaª eastward:ª ... And your borderª shall turnª° from the southª¹ to the ascentª of Akrabbim,²¹ and pass onª° to Zin:ª and the going forthª thereof shall be¹ from the southª¹ to Kadeshbarnea,ª and shall go onª° to Hazaraddar,ª and pass onª° to Azmon:ª" {Num 34:3-4} + "[This] then was¹ the lotª of the tribeª of the childrenª of Judahª by their families;ª [even] to¹ the borderª of Edomª the wildernessª of Zinª southwardª [was] the uttermost partª¹ of the south coast.ª" {Jsh 15:1} + "And it went outª° to¹ the south sideª¹ to Maalehacrabbim,ª and passed²° along¹ to Zin,ª and ascended upª° on the south sideª¹ unto Kadeshbarnea,ª and passed²° along¹ to Hezron,ª and went upª° to Adar,ª and fetched a compassª° to Karkaa:ª" {Jsh 15:3}.) Kadesh is called Rekam, by the Targumists, Rekem, in the Syriac, and Rakim, in Arabic. Rekem, says Rabbi Nissin (in Gittin, chapter 1) is on the east, meaning of the land of Israel. "And when we criedª° unto¹ the LORD,ª he heardª° our voice,ª and sentª° an angel,ª and hath brought us forthª° out of Egypt:ª¹ and, behold,¹ we¹ [are] in Kadesh,ª a cityª in the uttermostª of thy border:ª" {Num 20:16} + "The voiceª of the LORDª shakethª° the wilderness;ª the LORDª shakethª° the wildernessª of Kadesh.ª" {Psa 29:8}
