"And when ye reapª°¹ the harvestª of your land,ª thou shalt not¹ wholly reapª°¹ the cornersª of thy field,ª neither¹ shalt thou gatherª° the gleaningsª of thy harvest.ª ... And thou shalt not¹ gleanª° thy vineyard,ª neither¹ shalt thou gatherª° [every] grapeª of thy vineyard;ª thou shalt leaveª° them for the poorª and stranger:ª I¹ [am] the LORDª your God.ª" {Lev 19:9-10} + "And thou shalt rejoiceª° beforeª the LORDª thy God,ª thou,¹ and thy son,ª and thy daughter,ª and thy manservant,ª and thy maidservant,ª and the Leviteª that¹ [is] within thy gates,ª and the stranger,ª and the fatherless,ª and the widow,ª that¹ [are] amongª you, in the placeª which¹ the LORDª thy Godª hath chosenª° to placeª° his nameª there.¹ ... And thou shalt rejoiceª° in thy feast,ª thou,¹ and thy son,ª and thy daughter,ª and thy manservant,ª and thy maidservant,ª and the Levite,ª the stranger,ª and the fatherless,ª and the widow,ª that¹ [are] within thy gates.ª" {Deu 16:11-14} + "When¹ thou cuttest downª° thine harvestª in thy field,ª and hast forgotª° a sheafª in the field,ª thou shalt not¹ go againª° to fetchª° it: it shall be¹ for the stranger,ª for the fatherless,ª and for the widow:ª that¹ the LORDª thy Godª may blessª° thee in all¹ the workª of thine hands.ª ... When¹ thou gatherest²° the grapes¹ of thy vineyard,ª thou shalt not¹ gleanª° [it] afterward:ª it shall be¹ for the stranger,ª for the fatherless,ª and for the widow.ª" {Deu 24:19-21} + "And she went,²°¹ and came,ª° and gleanedª° in the fieldª afterª the reapers:ª° and her hapª was to lightª° on a partª of the fieldª [belonging] unto Boaz,ª who¹ [was] of the kindredª¹ of Elimelech.ª ... And she said,ª° I pray¹ you, let me gleanª° and gatherª° afterª the reapersª° among the sheaves:ª so she came,ª° and hath continuedª° even² from¹¹ the morningª until¹ now,¹ that¹ she tarriedª° a littleª in the house.ª" {Rth 2:3-7} + "And when she was risen upª° to glean,ª° Boazª commandedª°¹ his young men,ª saying,ª° Let her gleanª° even¹ among¹ the sheaves,ª and reproachª° her not:¹" {Rth 2:15} + "And let fallª° also¹ [some] of¹ the handfulsª of purposeª° for her, and leaveª° [them], that she may gleanª° [them], and rebukeª° her not.¹ ... So she kept fastª° by the maidensª of Boazª to gleanª° unto¹ the endª° of barleyª harvestª and of wheatª harvest;ª and dweltª° with¹ her mother in law.ª" {Rth 2:16-23} + "If¹ I have withheldª° the poorª from [their] desire,ª¹ or have caused the eyesª of the widowª to fail;ª° ... If¹ I have lifted upª° my handª against¹ the fatherless,ª when¹ I sawª° my helpª in the gate:ª" {Job 31:16-21} + "[[To the chief Musician,ª° A Psalmª of David.]]ª Blessedª [is] he that considerethª°¹ the poor:ª the LORDª will deliverª° him in timeª of trouble.ª ... The LORDª will strengthenª° him upon¹ the bedª of languishing:ª thou wilt makeª° all¹ his bedª in his sickness.ª" {Psa 41:1-3} + "He hath dispersed,ª° he hath givenª° to the poor;ª his righteousnessª endurethª° for ever;ª his hornª shall be exaltedª° with honour.ª" {Psa 112:9} + "There isª that scattereth,ª° and yet¹ increaseth;ª° and [there is] that withholdethª° more than is meet,ª¹ but [it tendeth] to poverty.ª ... The liberalª soulª shall be made fat:ª° and he that waterethª° shall be wateredª° also¹ himself.¹" {Prv 11:24-25} + "[Is it] not¹ to dealª° thy breadª to the hungry,ª and that thou bringª° the poorª that are cast outª to thy house?ª when¹ thou seestª° the naked,ª that thou coverª° him; and that thou hide²° not thyself¹¹ from thine own flesh?ª¹ ... Then¹ shall thy lightª break forthª° as the morning,ª and thine healthª shall spring forthª° speedily:ª and thy righteousnessª shall goª° beforeª thee; the gloryª of the LORDª shall be thy rereward.ª°" {Isa 58:7-8} + "And [if] thou draw outª° thy soulª to the hungry,ª and satisfyª° the afflictedª° soul;ª then shall thy lightª riseª° in obscurity,ª and thy darknessª [be] as the noonday:ª" {Isa 58:10} + "But¹ rather² giveª° almsª of such things as ye have;ª° and,ª behold,ª° all thingsª areª° cleanª unto you.ª" {Lke 11:41} + "Thereforeª I thoughtª° it necessaryª to exhortª° the¹ brethren,ª thatª they would go beforeª° untoª you,ª andª make up beforehandª° yourª bounty,ª whereof ye had notice before,ª° that the sameª might beª° ready,ªª asª [a matter of] bounty,ª andª notª asª [of] covetousness.ª ... Forª the¹ administrationª of thisª serviceª notª onlyª suppliethªª°° the¹ wantª of the¹ saints,ª butª is abundantª° alsoª byª manyª thanksgivingsª unto God;ª" {2Co 9:5-12}; To the institution of the feast of pentecost is annexed a repetition of that law, by which they were required to leave the gleanings of their fields, and the corn that grew on the ends of the butts, for the poor. It may come in here as a thing which the priests must take occasion to remind the people of, when they brought their first-fruits, intimating to them, that to obey even in this small matter was better than sacrifice; and that unless they were obedient, their offerings should not be accepted. It also taught them that the joy of harvest should express itself in charity to the poor, who must have their due out of what we have, as well as God his. They that are truly sensible of the mercy they receive from God, will without grudging shew mercy to the poor. |
