we said:
Every word in this verse is simplicity and pathos itself. No man of the least sensibility can read it without great emotion. Indeed the whole speech is exquisitely beautiful, and perhaps the most complete pattern of genuine natural eloquence extant in any language. When we read this generous speech, we forgive Judah all the past, and cannot refuse to say, "Thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise." a child:
"And it came to pass,¹ as her soulª was in departing,ª ° (for¹ she died)ª ° that she calledª ° his nameª Benoni:ª but his fatherª calledª ° him Benjamin.ª" {Gen 35:18} + "Now Israelª lovedª °¹ Josephª more than all¹ ¹ his children,ª because¹ he¹ [was] the sonª of his old age:ª and he madeª ° him a coatª of [many] colours.ª" {Gen 37:3} + "And they saidª ° oneª to¹ another,ª Behold,¹ thisª dreamerª ª cometh.ª °" {Gen 37:19} + "And they said,ª ° The manª asked² ° us straitlyª ° of our state, and of our kindred,ª saying,ª ° [Is] your fatherª yet¹ alive?ª have¹ ye² [another] brother?ª and we toldª ° him according² to¹ the tenorª of these¹ words:ª could we certainly² ° knowª ° that¹ he would say,ª ° Bring² ° your brother² down?ª °¹ ¹ ... and his brother:
"And he knew¹ it,² ° and said,ª ° [It is] my son'sª coat;ª an evilª beastª hath devouredª ° him; Josephª is without doubt² ° rent in pieces.ª ° ... And all¹ his sonsª and all¹ his daughtersª rose upª ° to comfortª ° him; but he refusedª ° to be comforted;ª ° and he said,ª ° For¹ I will go downª ° into the graveª unto¹ my sonª mourning.ª Thus his fatherª weptª ° for him." {Gen 37:33-35} + "And Jacobª their fatherª saidª ° unto¹ them, Me have ye bereavedª ° [of my children]: Josephª [is] not,¹ and Simeonª [is] not,¹ and ye will takeª ° Benjaminª [away]: all¹ these things are¹ against¹ me." {Gen 42:36} + "And he said,ª ° My sonª shall not¹ go downª ° with¹ you; for¹ his brotherª is dead,ª ° and he¹ is leftª ° alone:¹ if mischiefª befallª ° him by the wayª in the which¹ ye go,² °¹ then shall ye bring downª °¹ my gray hairsª with sorrowª to the grave.ª" {Gen 42:38}

he alone:
"And thy servantª my fatherª saidª ° unto¹ us, Ye¹ knowª ° that¹ my wifeª bareª ° me twoª [sons]: ... And if ye takeª °¹ this¹ also¹ fromª ¹ me,ª and mischiefª befall¹ him,² ° ye shall bring downª °¹ my gray hairsª with sorrowª to the grave.ª" {Gen 44:27-29} + "Nowª whenª he came nighª ° to the¹ gateª of the¹ city,ª ¹ behold,ª ² ° there was² ° a dead manª ° carried out,ª ° the onlyª sonª of his² ¹ mother,ª andª she² ¹ wasª ° a widow:ª andª muchª peopleª of the¹ cityª wasª ° withª her.ª" {Lke 7:12}
