 1:1 ¶ The word of the Lord which came to Zephaniah{gr.Sophonias} the son of Hushai{gr.Chusi}, the son of Gedaliah{gr.Godolias}, the son of Amorias, the son of Hezekiah{gr.Ezekias}, in the days of Josiah{gr.Josias} son of Amon, king of Judah{gr.Juda}.

 1:1 ¶ The wordº of Yahwehº whichº cameº untoº Zephaniahº the sonº of Cushi,º the sonº of Gedaliah,º the sonº of Amariah,º the sonº of Hizkiah,º in the daysº of Josiahº the sonº of Amon,º kingº of Judah.º

 1:2 Let there be an utter cutting off from the face of the land, saith the Lord.

 1:2 I will utterlyºº consumeººº allº [things] from offººº the land,ºº saithºº Yahweh.º

 1:3 Let man and cattle be cut off; let the birds of the air and the fishes of the sea be cut off; and the ungodly shall fail, and I will take away the transgressors from the face of the land, saith the Lord.

 1:3 I will consumeºº manº and beast;º I will consumeºº the fowlsº of the heaven,º and the fishesº of the sea,º and the stumblingblocksº withº the wicked;º and I will cut offººº manº from offººº the land,º saithºº Yahweh.º

 1:4 And I will stretch out mine hand upon Judah{gr.Juda}, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will remove the names of Baal out of this place, and the names of the priests;

 1:4 I will also stretch outºº mine handº uponº Judah,º and uponº allº the inhabitantsºº of Jerusalem;º and I will cut offººº the remnantº of Baalº fromº thisº place,º [and]º the nameº of the Chemarimsº withº the priests;º

 1:5 and them that worship the host of heaven upon the house-tops; and them that worship and swear by the Lord, and them that swear by their king;

 1:5 And them that worshipºº the hostº of heavenº uponº the housetops;º and them that worshipºº [and] that swearºº by Yahweh,º and that swearºº by Malcham;ºº

 1:6 and them that turn aside from the Lord, and them that seek not the Lord, and them that cleave not to the Lord.

 1:6 And them that are turned backºº fromºº Yahweh;º and [those] thatº have notº soughtººº Yahweh,º norº enquiredºº for him.

 1:7 Fear ye before the Lord God; for the day of the Lord is near; for the Lord has prepared his sacrifice, and has sanctified his guests.

 1:7 Hold thy peaceºº at the presenceºº of Adonaiº Yahweh:º forº the dayº of Yahwehº [is] at hand:º forº Yahwehº hath preparedºº a sacrifice,º he hath bidºº his guests.ºº

 1:8 And it shall come to pass in the day of the Lord's sacrifice, that I will take vengeance on the princes, and on the king's house, and upon all that wear strange apparel.

 1:8 And it shall come to passº in the dayº of Yahweh'sº sacrifice,º that I will punishººº the princes,º and the king'sº children,º and allº such as are clothedºº with strangeº apparel.º

 1:9 And I will openly take vengeance on the porches in that day, [on the men] that fill the house of the Lord their God with ungodliness and deceit.

 1:9 In the sameº dayº also will I punishººº allº those that leapºº onº the threshold,º which fillºº their adonim'sº housesº with violenceº and deceit.º

 1:10 And there shall be in that day, saith the Lord, the sound of a cry from the gate of men slaying, and a howling from the second [gate], and a great crashing from the hills.

 1:10 And it shall come to passº in thatº day,º saithºº Yahweh,º [that there shall be] the noiseº of a cryº from the fishº gate,ºº and an howlingº fromº the second,º and a greatº crashingº from the hills.ºº

 1:11 Lament, ye that inhabit the [city] that has been broken down, for all the people has become like Canaan{gr.Chanaan}; and all that were exalted by silver have been utterly destroyed.

 1:11 Howl,ºº ye inhabitantsºº of Maktesh,º forº allº the merchantº peopleº are cut down;ºº allº they that bearº silverº are cut off.ºº

 1:12 And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] I will search Jerusalem with a candle, and will take vengeance on the men that despise the things committed to them; but they say in their hearts, The Lord will not do any good, neither will he do any evil.

 1:12 And it shall come to passº at thatº time,º [that] I will searchººº Jerusalemº with candles,º and punishººº the menºº that are settledºº onº their lees:º that sayºº in their heart,º Yahwehº will notº do good,ºº neitherº will he do evil.ºº

 1:13 And their power shall be for a spoil, and their houses for utter desolation; and they shall build houses, but shall not dwell in them; and they shall plant vineyards, but shall not drink the wine of them.

 1:13 Therefore their goodsº shall becomeº a booty,º and their housesº a desolation:º they shall also buildºº houses,º but notº inhabitºº [them]; and they shall plantºº vineyards,º but notº drinkººº the wineº thereof.

 1:14 For the great day of the Lord [is] near, [it is] near, and very speedy; the sound of the day of the Lord is made bitter and harsh.

 1:14 The greatº dayº of Yahwehº [is] near,º [it is] near,º and hastethº greatly,º [even] the voiceº of the dayº of Yahweh:º the mighty manº shall cryºº thereº bitterly.º

 1:15 A mighty day of wrath is that day, a day of affliction and distress, a day of desolation and destruction, a day of gloominess and darkness, a day of cloud and vapour,

 1:15 Thatº dayº [is] a dayº of wrath,º a dayº of troubleº and distress,º a dayº of wastenessº and desolation,º a dayº of darknessº and gloominess,º a dayº of cloudsº and thick darkness,º

 1:16 a day of the trumpet and cry against the strong cities, and against the high towers.

 1:16 A dayº of the trumpetº and alarmº againstº the fencedºº cities,º and againstº the highº towers.º

 1:17 And I will greatly afflict the men, and they shall walk as blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord; therefore he shall pour out their blood as dust, and their flesh as dung.

 1:17 And I will bring distressºº upon men,º that they shall walkºº like blind men,º becauseº they have sinnedºº against Yahweh:º and their bloodº shall be poured outºº as dust,º and their fleshº as the dung.º

 1:18 And their silver and their gold shall in nowise be able to rescue them in the day of the Lord's wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealously; for he will bring a speedy destruction on all them that inhabit the land.

 1:18 Neitherºº their silverº norº their goldº shall be ableºº to deliverºº them in the dayº of Yahweh'sº wrath;º but the wholeº landº shall be devouredºº by the fireº of his jealousy:º forº he shall makeºº evenº a speedyºº riddanceº ofº allº them that dwellºº in the land.º
