- the woman:
- Rather, a woman. The apostle here illustrates the position laid down in the preceding verse by a familiar instance. "And Adam²¹ said,ª° Thisª [is] nowª boneª of my bones,ª¹ and fleshª of my flesh:ª¹ sheª shall be calledª° Woman,ª because¹ sheª was takenª° out of Man.ª¹ ... Thereforeª¹ shall a manª leaveª°¹ his fatherª and his mother,ª and shall cleaveª° unto his wife:ª and they shall be¹ oneª flesh.ª" {Gen 2:23-24} + "And her husbandª heardª° [it], and held his peaceª° at her in the dayª that he heardª° [it]: then her vowsª shall stand,ª° and her bondsª wherewith¹ she boundª°¹ her soulª shall stand.ª° ... But if¹ her husbandª disallowedª° her on the dayª that he heardª° [it]; then he shall make¹ her vow¹ which she vowed,²¹¹ and that which she utteredª with her lips,ª wherewith¹ she boundª°¹ her soul,ª of none effect:ª° and the LORDª shall forgiveª° her." {Num 30:7-8} + "The¹ wifeª hath²° not² powerª°¹ of her ownª body,ª butª the¹ husband:ª andª likewiseª alsoª the¹ husbandª hath²° not² powerª°¹ of his ownª body,ª butª the¹ wife.ª" {1Co 7:4} + "The wifeª is boundª° by the lawª² as long² asª¹¹ her²¹ husbandª liveth;ª° butª ifª her²¹ husbandª be dead,ª° she isª° at libertyª to be marriedª° to whomª she will;ª° onlyª inª the Lord.ª" {1Co 7:39}
