- The chief:
- As the chief captain did not understand Hebrew, he was ignorant of the charge against Paul, and also of the defence which the apostle had made; but as he saw that they grew more and more outrageous, he supposed that Paul must have given them the highest provocation, and therefore, according to the barbarous and irrational practice which has existed in all countries, he determined to put him to the torture, in order to make him confess his crime. "Andª as they went aboutª° to killª° him,ª tidingsª cameª° unto the¹ chief captainª of the¹ band,ª thatª allª Jerusalemª was in an uproar.ª° ... Whoª immediatelyª tookª° soldiersª andª centurions,ª and ran downª° untoª them:ª andª when they¹ sawª° the¹ chief captainª andª the¹ soldiers,ª they left²°¹ beatingª° of Paul.ª" {Act 21:31-32} + "Andª when there aroseª° a greatª dissension,ª the¹ chief captain,ª fearingª° lestª Paulª should have been pulled in piecesª° ofª them,ª commandedª° the¹ soldiersª to go down,ª° and to take²° him² by forceª°¹ fromª amongª them,²¹ andª to bringª° [him] intoª the¹ castle.ª" {Act 23:10} + "Thisª manª was takenª° ofª the¹ Jews,ª andª shouldª° have been killedª° ofª them:ª then came¹ I²° withª an army,ª and rescuedª° him,ª having understoodª° thatª he wasª° a Roman.ª" {Act 23:27}
