"Andª manyª otherª signsª trulyª² didªº Jesusª in the presenceª of his²¹ disciples,ª whichª areªº notª writtenªº inª thisª book:ª ... Butª theseª are written,ªº thatª ye might believeªº thatª Jesusª isªº the¹ Christ,ª the¹ Sonª of God;ª andª thatª believingªº ye might haveªº lifeª throughª his²¹ name.ª" {Jhn 20:30-31} + "Lo,¹ these¹ [are] partsª of his ways:ª but how¹ littleª a portionª is heardªº of him? but the thunderª of his powerª who¹ can understand?ªº" {Job 26:14} + "Many,ª O LORDª my God,ª [are] thy wonderful²º works¹ [which] thou¹ hast done,ªº and thy thoughtsª [which are] to¹ us-ward: they cannot¹ be reckoned up in orderªº unto thee:¹ [if] I would declareªº and speakªº [of them], they are moreªº than can be numbered.ªº¹" {Psa 40:5} + "My mouthª shall shew forthªº thy righteousnessª [and] thy salvationª all¹ the day;ª for¹ I knowªº not¹ the numbersª [thereof]." {Psa 71:15} + "And further,ª by these,ª¹ my son,ª be admonished:ªº of makingªº manyªº booksª [there is] no¹ end;ª and muchªº studyª [is] a wearinessª of the flesh.ª" {Ecc 12:12} + "The blindª receive their sight,ªº andª the lameª walk,ªº the lepersª are cleansed,ªº andª the deafª hear,ªº the deadª are raised up,ªº andª the poorª have the gospel preached to them.ªº" {Mtt 11:5} + "Howª Godª anointedªº Jesusª ofª Nazarethª with the Holyª Ghostª andª with power:ª whoª² went aboutªº doing good,ªº andª healingªº allª that were oppressedªº ofª the¹ devil;ª forª Godª wasªº withª him.ª" {Act 10:38} + "I have shewedªº youª all things,ª how thatª soª labouringªº ye oughtªº to supportªº the¹ weak,ªº andª to rememberªº the¹ wordsª of the¹ Lordª Jesus,ª howª he²¹ said,ªº It isªº moreª blessedª to giveªº thanª to receive.ªº" {Act 20:35} + "Andª whatª shall I²º moreª say?ªº forª the¹ timeª would failªº meª to tellªº ofª Gedeon,ª andª [of] Barak,ª andª [of] Samson,ª andª [of] Jephthae;ª [of] Davidª also,²¹ and²¹ Samuel,ª andª [of] the¹ prophets:ª" {Hbr 11:32}
that even:
This is a very strong eastern expression to represent the number of miracles which Jesus wrought. But however strong and strange it may appear to us of the western world, we find sacred and other authors using hyperboles of the like kind and signification. See "And there¹ we sawªº¹ the giants,ª the sonsª of Anak,ª [which come] of¹ the giants:ª and we were¹ in our own sightª as grasshoppers,ª and so¹ we were¹ in their sight.ª" {Num 13:33} + "Whither¹ shall we¹ go up?ªº our brethrenª have discouragedªº¹ our heart,ª saying,ªº The peopleª [is] greaterª and tallerªº than¹ we; the citiesª [are] greatª and walled¹ up²º to heaven;ª and moreover¹ we have seenªº the sonsª of the Anakimsª there.¹" {Deu 1:28} + "The treeª grew,ªº and was strong,ªº and the heightª thereof reachedªº unto heaven,ª and the sightª thereof to the endª of allª the earth:ª" {Dan 4:11} + "[That which is] crookedªº cannotªº¹ be made straight:ªº and that which is wantingª cannotªº¹ be numbered.ªº" {Ecc 1:15}. Basnage gives a very similar hyperbole taken from the Jewish writers, in which Jochanan is said to have "composed such a great number of precepts and lessons, that if the heavens were paper, and all the trees of the forest so many pens, and all the children of men so many scribes, they would not suffice to write all his lessons." "Then Amaziahª the priestª of Bethelª sentªº to¹ Jeroboamª kingª of Israel,ª saying,ªº Amosª hath conspiredªº against¹ thee in the midstª of the houseª of Israel:ª the landª is not ableªº¹ to bearªº¹ all¹ his words.ª" {Ams 7:10} + "Andª againª I sayªº unto you,ª It isªº easierª for a camelª to goªº throughª the eyeª of a needle,ª thanª for a rich manª to enterªº intoª the¹ kingdomª of God.ª" {Mtt 19:24}
