"And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: ... But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name." {Jhn 20:30-31} + "Lo, these [are] parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?" {Job 26:14} + "Many, O LORD my God, [are] thy wonderful works [which] thou hast done, and thy thoughts [which are] to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: [if] I would declare and speak [of them], they are more than can be numbered." {Psa 40:5} + "My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness [and] thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers [thereof]." {Psa 71:15} + "And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books [there is] no end; and much study [is] a weariness of the flesh." {Ecc 12:12} + "The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them." {Mtt 11:5} + "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." {Act 10:38} + "I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive." {Act 20:35} + "And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and [of] Barak, and [of] Samson, and [of] Jephthae; [of] David also, and Samuel, and [of] the prophets:" {Hbr 11:32}

This is a very strong eastern expression to represent the number of miracles which Jesus wrought. But however strong and strange it may appear to us of the western world, we find sacred and other authors using hyperboles of the like kind and signification. See "And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, [which come] of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight." {Num 13:33} + "Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people [is] greater and taller than we; the cities [are] great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there." {Deu 1:28} + "The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:" {Dan 4:11} + "[That which is] crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered." {Ecc 1:15}. Basnage gives a very similar hyperbole taken from the Jewish writers, in which Jochanan is said to have "composed such a great number of precepts and lessons, that if the heavens were paper, and all the trees of the forest so many pens, and all the children of men so many scribes, they would not suffice to write all his lessons." "Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words." {Ams 7:10} + "And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." {Mtt 19:24}
