- laid aside:
- That is, his gown, or upper coat, ιματια, with the girdle by which it was girdled close to his tunic, or inner coat; and instead of his girdle, he tied a towel about him, that he might have it in readiness to dry their feet,and that he might appear as a servant. Indeed the whole action was a servile one; and never performed by a superior to an inferior. "Blessedª [are] thoseª servants,ª whomª the¹ lordª when he comethª° shall findª° watching:ª° verilyª I sayª° unto you,ª thatª he shall gird¹ himself,²° andª make²° themª to sit down to meat,ª° andª will come forthª° and serveª° them.ª" {Lke 12:37} + "Butª whichª ofª you,ª havingª° a servantª plowingª° orª feeding cattle,ª° will sayª° unto him² by and by,ª when he is comeª° fromª the¹ field,ª Goª° and sit down to meat?ª°" {Lke 17:7} + "Forª whetherª [is] greater,ª he that sitteth at meat,ª° orª he that serveth?ª° [is] notª he that sitteth at meat?ª° butª Iª amª° amongªª youª asª he that serveth.ª°" {Lke 22:27} + "Forª ye knowª°° the¹ graceª of ourª Lordª Jesusª Christ,ª that,²¹ though he wasª° rich,ª yet for²° your² sakesª¹ he became poor,ª° thatª yeª through hisª povertyª might be rich.ª°" {2Co 8:9} + "Who,ª beingª° inª the formª of God,ª thought¹ it²° notª robberyª to beª° equalª with God:ª ... Andª being foundª° in fashionª asª a man,ª he humbledª° himself,ª and becameª° obedientª untoª death,ª evenª the deathª of the cross.ª" {Php 2:6-8}
