- Ephraim:
- Ephraim appears to be the same city which is called Ephrain, (see note on "And Abijahª pursuedª° afterª Jeroboam,ª and tookª° citiesª from¹ him,¹ Bethelª with¹ the townsª thereof, and Jeshanahª with¹ the townsª thereof, and Ephrainª with the townsª thereof." {2Ch 13:19}), and Ephron, (see note on "And the borderª was drawnª° from the topª¹ of the hillª unto¹ the fountainª of the waterª of Nephtoah,ª and went outª° to¹ the citiesª of mountª Ephron;ª and the borderª was drawnª° to Baalah,ª which¹ [is] Kirjathjearim:ª" {Jsh 15:9}), which was situated eight miles north of Jerusalem, near Bethel, and apparently between that city and Jericho. Accordingly we find that a desert, or wilderness, extended from Jericho to Bethel ("And the lotª of the childrenª of Josephª fellª° from Jordanª¹ by Jericho,ª unto the waterª of Jerichoª on the east,ª to the wildernessª that goeth upª° from Jerichoª¹ throughout mountª Bethel,ª" {Jsh 16:1}), called the wilderness of Bethaven ("And their borderª on the northª sideª was¹ from¹ Jordan;ª and the borderª went upª° to¹ the sideª of Jerichoª on the north² side,¹¹ and went upª° through the mountainsª westward;ª and the goings outª thereof were¹ at the wildernessª of Bethaven.ª" {Jsh 18:12}), in which Joshua and the Israelites slew the inhabitants of Ai. ("And it came to pass,¹ when Israelª had made an endª° of slayingª°¹ all¹ the inhabitantsª° of Aiª in the field,ª in the wildernessª wherein¹ they chasedª° them, and when they were all¹ fallenª° on the edgeª of the sword,ª until¹ they were consumed,ª° that all¹ the Israelitesª returnedª° unto Ai,ª and smoteª° it with the edgeª of the sword.ª" {Jsh 8:24}.)
