I am:
That our Lord by this expression asserted his divinity and eternal existence, as the great I AM, appears evident from the use of the present tense, instead of the past tense, from its being in answer to the Jews, who enquired whether he had seen Abraham, and from its being thus understood by the multitude, who were exasperated at it to such a degree that they took up stones to stone him. The ancient Jews not only believed that the Messiah was superior to and Lord of all the patriarchs, and even of angels, but that his celestial nature existed with God from whom it emanated, before the creation, and that the creation was effected by his ministry. "And Godª saidª° unto¹ Moses,ª I AMª° THAT¹ I AM:ª° and he said,ª° Thus¹ shalt thou sayª° unto the childrenª of Israel,ª I AM¹ hath sentª° me unto¹ you." {Exd 3:14} + "Yea,¹ before the dayª¹ [was] I¹ [am] he;¹ and [there is] none¹ that can deliverª° out of my hand:ª¹ I will work,ª° and who¹ shall letª° it?" {Isa 43:13} + "Thus¹ saithª° the LORDª the Kingª of Israel,ª and his redeemerª° the LORDª of hosts;ª I¹ [am] the first,ª and I¹ [am] the last;ª and besideª¹ me [there is] no¹ God.ª" {Isa 44:6} + "Fearª° ye not,¹ neither¹ be afraid:ª°°° have not¹ I toldª° thee from that time,ª¹ and have declaredª° [it]? ye¹ [are] even my witnesses.ª Is thereª a Godª besideª¹ me? yea, [there is] no¹ God;ª I knowª° not¹ [any]." {Isa 44:8} + "Rememberª° the former thingsª of old:ª¹ for¹ I¹ [am] God,ª and [there is] none¹ else;¹ [I am] God,ª and [there is] noneª like² me,¹" {Isa 46:9} + "Hearkenª° unto¹ me, O Jacobª and Israel,ª my called;ª° I¹ [am] he;¹ I¹ [am] the first,ª I¹ also¹ [am] the last.ª" {Isa 48:12} + "Iª amª°¹ Alphaª andª¹ Omega,ª the beginningª andª the ending,² saith²°¹ the¹ Lord,ª which² is,²°°²° and² which² was,²°°²° and² which² is to come,ª²°° the¹ Almighty.ª" {Rev 1:8}
