This was most probably Hebron, a city of the priests, and situated in the hill country of Judea ("And at that¹ timeª cameª° Joshua,ª and cut offª°¹ the Anakimsª from¹ the mountains,ª from¹ Hebron,ª from¹ Debir,ª from¹ Anab,ª and from all¹¹ the mountainsª of Judah,ª and from all¹¹ the mountainsª of Israel:ª Joshuaª destroyed¹ them utterly²° with¹ their cities.ª" {Jsh 11:21} + "And they gaveª° them¹ the cityª of Arbaª°² the fatherª of Anak,ª which¹ [city is] Hebron,ª in the hillª [country] of Judah,ª with¹ the suburbsª thereof round aboutª it." {Jsh 21:11} + "Thus they gaveª° to the childrenª of Aaronª the priestª¹ Hebronª with¹ her suburbs,ª [to be]¹ a cityª of refugeª for the slayer;ª° and Libnahª with¹ her suburbs,ª" {Jsh 21:13}), about 25 miles south of Jerusalem, and nearly 100 from Nazareth. Such was the intense desire of Mary's mind to visit and communicate with her relative Elisabeth, that she scrupled not to undertake this long journey to effect her purpose.
