- Abiathar:
- It appears from the passage referred to here, that Ahimelech was then high priest at Nob; and from other passages, that Abiathar was his son. Various conjectures have been formed in order to solve this difficulty; and some, instead of untying, have cut the knot, by pronouncing it an interpolation. The most probable opinion seems to be, that both father and son had two names, the father being also called Abiathar; and this appears almost certain from "And Zadokª the sonª of Ahitub,ª and Ahimelechª the sonª of Abiathar,ª [were] the priests;ª and Seraiahª [was] the scribe;ª°" {2Sm 8:17} + "And Zadokª the sonª of Ahitub,ª and Abimelechª the sonª of Abiathar,ª [were] the priests;ª and Shavshaª was scribe;ª°" {1Ch 18:16}, where Ahimelech seems evidently termed Abiathar, while Abiathar is called Ahimelech or Abimelech. (Compare "And unto Abiatharª the priestª saidª° the king,ª Get²°¹ thee to Anathoth,ª unto¹ thine own fields;ª for¹ thou¹ [art] worthyª of death:ª but I will not¹ at this¹ timeª put thee to death,ª° because¹ thou barestª°¹ the arkª of the Lordª GOD²¹ beforeª Davidª my father,ª and because¹ thou hast been afflictedª° in all¹ wherein¹ my fatherª was afflicted.ª° ...
