{Matthew 22:21} They say 3004 z5719 unto him, 846 Caesar's. 2541 Then 5119 saith x3004 he y3004 z5719 unto them, 846 Render 591 z5628 therefore 3767 unto Caesar 2541 the things x3588 which are y3588 Caesar's; 2541 and 2532 unto God 2316 the things x3588 that are y3588 God's. 2316
Render:
"He saith,ª° Yes.ª Andª whenª he was comeª° intoª the¹ house,ª Jesusª preventedª° him,ª saying,ª° Whatª thinkestª° thou,ª Simon?ª ofª whomª do²° the¹ kingsª of the¹ earthª takeª° customª orª tribute?ª ofª their own²¹ children,ª orª ofª strangers?ª ... Notwithstanding,ª lestª we should offendª° them,ª go¹ thou²° toª the¹ sea,ª and castª° an hook,ª andª take upª° the fishª that first²¹ cometh up;ª° andª when thou hast openedª° hisª mouth,ª thou shalt findª° a piece of money:ª thatª take,ª° and¹ giveª° unto themª forª meª andª thee.ª" {Mtt 17:25-27} + "My son,ª fearª° thou¹ the LORDª and the king:ª [and] meddleª° not¹ with¹ them that are given to change:ª°" {Prv 24:21} + "Andª they beganª° to accuseª° him,ª saying,ª° We foundª° thisª [fellow] pervertingª° the¹ nation,ª andª forbiddingª° to giveª° tributeª to Caesar,ª sayingª° that he himselfª isª° Christª a King.ª" {Lke 23:2} + "Renderª° thereforeª to allª their dues:ª tributeª to whomª tributeª [is due]; customª to whomª custom;ª fearª to whomª fear;ª honourª to whomª honour.ª" {Rom 13:7}
are Caesar's:
This conclusion is drawn from their own maxims and premises. They held that "wherever the money of any king is current, there the inhabitants acknowledge that king for their lord." Now, by admitting that this was Cesar's coin, and by consenting to receive it as the current coin of their country, they in fact acknowledged their subjection to his government, and of course their obligation to pay the tribute demanded of them. This answer was full of consummate wisdom, and it completely defeated the insidious designs of his enemies. He avoided rendering himself odious to the Jewish people by opposing their notions of liberty, or appearing to pay court to the emperor, without exposing himself to the charge of sedition and disaffection to the Roman government.
and:
"ª Jesusª saidª° unto him,ª Thou shalt loveª° the Lordª thyª Godª withª allª thyª heart,ª andª withª allª thyª soul,ª andª withª allª thyª mind.ª" {Mtt 22:37} + "Thenª saithª° Jesusª unto him,ª Get thee hence,ª° Satan:ª forª it is written,ª° Thou shalt worshipª° the Lordª thyª God,ª andª himª onlyª shalt thou serve.ª°" {Mtt 4:10} + "Shadrach,ª Meshach,ª and Abednego,ª answeredª° and saidª° to the king,ª O Nebuchadnezzar,ª weª [are] notª carefulª° to answerª° thee inª thisª matter.ª ... But ifª not,ª be¹ it²° knownª° unto thee, O king,ª that¹ we willª notª serveª° thy gods,ª norª worshipª° the goldenª imageª which¹ thou hast set up.ª°" {Dan 3:16-18} + "Now when¹ Danielª knewª° that¹ the writingª was signed,ª° he wentª° into his house;ª and his windowsª being openª° in his chamberª towardª Jerusalem,ª he¹ kneeledª° uponª his kneesª threeª timesª a day,ª and prayed,ª° and gave thanksª° beforeª his God,ª asªª¹ he didªª°° aforetime.ªªª ... Thenª theseª menª assembled,ª° and foundª° Danielª prayingª° and making supplicationª° beforeª his God.ª" {Dan 6:10-11} + "And when he cameª° to the den,ª he criedª° with a lamentableª° voiceª unto Daniel:ª [and] the kingª spakeª° and saidª° to Daniel,ª O Daniel,ª servantª of the livingª God,ª is thy God,ª whom¹ thou¹ servestª° continually,ª ableª° to deliverª° thee fromª the lions?ª ... Thenª was the king² exceeding² gladª°¹¹ for¹ him,² and commandedª° that they should take²° Daniel² upª°¹ out ofª the den.ª So Danielª was taken upª° out ofª the den,ª and no² mannerª¹ of hurtª was foundª° upon him, because¹ he believedª° in his God.ª" {Dan 6:20-23} + "A sonª honourethª° [his] father,ª and a servantª his master:ª if¹ then I¹ [be] a father,ª where¹ [is] mine honour?ª and if¹ I¹ [be] a master,ª where¹ [is] my fear?ª saithª° the LORDª of hostsª unto you, O priests,ª that despiseª° my name.ª And ye say,ª° Wherein¹ have we despisedª°¹ thy name?ª ... And if¹ ye offerª° the blindª for sacrifice,ª° [is it] not¹ evil?ª and if¹ ye offerª° the lameª and sick,ª° [is it] not¹ evil?ª offerª° it now¹ unto thy governor;ª will he be pleasedª° with thee, or¹ acceptª° thy person?ª saithª° the LORDª of hosts.ª" {Mal 1:6-8} + "Will a manª robª° God?ª Yet¹ ye¹ have robbedª° me. But ye say,ª° Wherein¹ have we robbedª° thee? In tithesª and offerings.ª ... Bringª° ye¹ all¹ the tithesª into¹ the storehouse,ª¹ that there may be¹ meatª in mine house,ª and proveª° me now¹ herewith,ª saithª° the LORDª of hosts,ª if¹ I will not¹ openª° you¹ the windowsª of heaven,ª and pour you outª° a blessing,ª that¹ [there shall] not¹ [be room] enoughª [to receive it]." {Mal 3:8-10} + "Butª Peterª andª Johnª answeredª° and saidª° untoª them,ª Whetherª it beª° rightª in the sightª of Godª to hearkenª° unto youª more¹ thanª² unto God,ª judge¹ ye.²°" {Act 4:19} + "Thenª Peterª andª the¹ [other] apostlesª answeredª° and said,ª° We oughtª° to obeyª° Godª ratherª thanª men.ª" {Act 5:29} + "² Submit yourselvesª° to¹ everyª ordinanceª of manª for² the Lord's sake:ª¹¹ whether¹ it be² to the king,ª asª supreme;ª° ... Honourª° allª [men]. Loveª° the¹ brotherhood.ª Fearª° God.ª Honourª° the¹ king.ª" {1Pe 2:13-17}
