- Bethany:
- Bethany was a village to the east of the mount of Olives, on the road to Jericho; fifteen stadia ("Nowª Bethanyª wasª° nigh² unto¹ Jerusalem,ª aboutª fifteenª furlongsª off:ª" {Jhn 11:18}) or nearly two miles, as Jerome states, from Jerusalem. This village is now small and poor, and the cultivation of the soil around it is much neglected; but it is a pleasant, romantic spot, shaded by the mount of Olives, and abounding in vines and long grass. It consists of from thirty to forty dwellings inhabited by about 600; Mohammedans, for whose use there is a neat little mosque standing on an eminence. Here they shew the ruins of a sort of castle as the house of Lazarus, and a grotto as his tomb; and the house of Simon the leper, of Mary Magdalene and of Martha, and the identical tree which our Lord cursed, are among the monkish curiosities of the place. "Andª Jesusª enteredª° intoª Jerusalem,ª andª intoª the¹ temple:ª andª when he had looked round about¹ upon²° all things,ª and¹ nowª the¹ eventideª² was come,ª°¹ he went outª° untoª Bethanyª withª the¹ twelve.ª" {Mrk 11:11} + "Andª whenª evenª was come,ª° he wentª° out¹ of² the¹ city.ª" {Mrk 11:19} + "Nowª it came to pass,ª° as² theyª went,ª° thatª heª enteredª° intoª a certainª village:ª andª a certainª womanª namedª Marthaª receivedª° himª intoª her²¹ house.ª" {Lke 10:38} + "Nowª a certainª [man] wasª° sick,ª° [named] Lazarus,ª ofª Bethany,ª² the¹ townª of Maryª andª herª sisterª Martha.ª" {Jhn 11:1} + "Nowª Bethanyª wasª° nigh² unto¹ Jerusalem,ª aboutª fifteenª furlongsª off:ª" {Jhn 11:18} + "Thenª Jesusª sixª daysª beforeª the¹ passoverª cameª° toª Bethany,ª whereª Lazarusª wasª° which² had been dead,ª° whomª he raisedª° fromª the dead.ª ... Thenª tookª° Maryª a poundª of ointmentª of spikenard,ªª very costly,ª and anointedª° the¹ feetª of Jesus,ª andª wipedª° hisª feetª with her²¹ hair:ª andª the¹ houseª was filledª° withª the¹ odourª of the¹ ointment.ª" {Jhn 12:1-3}
