- tribute:
- "Gr. didrachma, in value fifteen pence." "This¹ they shall give,ª° every one¹ that passethª° amongª them that are numbered,ª° halfª a shekelª after the shekelª of the sanctuary:ª (a shekelª [is] twentyª gerahs:)ª an halfª shekelª [shall be] the offeringª of the LORD.ª" {Exd 30:13} + "A bekahª for every man,ª [that is], halfª a shekel,ª after the shekelª of the sanctuary,ª for every one¹ that wentª° to¹ be numbered,ª° from twenty² years² oldª¹¹¹ and upward,ª for sixª hundredª thousandª and threeª thousandª and fiveª hundredª and fiftyª [men]." {Exd 38:26}; This tribute seems to have been the half shekel which every male among the Jews paid yearly for the support of the temple, and which was continued by them, wherever dispersed, till after the time of Vespasian.
