{Haggai 1:9} Ye looked 6437 z8800 for x413 much, 7235 z8687 and, lo, x2009 [it came] to little; 4592 and when ye brought 935 z8689 [it] home, 1004 I did blow 5301 z8804 upon it. Why? x3282 x4100 saith 5002 z8803 the LORD 3068 of hosts. 6635 Because 3282 of mine house 1004 that x834 [is] waste, 2720 and ye x859 run 7323 z8801 every man 376 unto his own house. 1004
Ye looked:
They had used all proper means in the cultivation of their lands, and had "sown much;" but when they rationally entertained the most sanguine expectations of a large increase, they were strangely disappointed; and even what they had brought home was unaccountably wasted, as if the Lord had "blown upon it," and driven it away! And the reason was, because they neglected the temple, and left it in ruins, whilst they eagerly employed themselves in building and decorating their own houses; therefore they were visited by drought and famine, and by various diseases on man and beast. "Ye have sownª° much,ª° and bring²° in¹ little;ª ye eat,ª° but ye have not enough;²¹¹ ye drink,ª° but ye are not filled with drink;ª°¹ ye clotheª° you, but there is none warm;²¹¹ and he that earneth wagesª° earneth wagesª° [to put it] into¹ a bagª with holes.ª°" {Hgg 1:6} + "Since those [days] were,¹¹ when [one] cameª° to¹ an heapª of twentyª [measures], there were¹ [but] ten:ª when [one] cameª° to¹ the pressfatª for to draw outª° fiftyª [vessels] out of the press,ª there were¹ [but] twenty.ª ... I smoteª° you with blastingª and with mildewª and with hailª in¹ all¹ the laboursª of your hands;ª yet ye [turned] not¹ to¹ me, saithª° the LORD.ª" {Hgg 2:16-17} + "Because¹ thou hast forgottenª° the Godª of thy salvation,ª and hast not¹ been mindfulª° of the rockª of thy strength,ª therefore¹¹ shalt thou plantª° pleasantª plants,ª and shalt setª° it with strangeª° slips:ª ... In the dayª shalt thou make thy plantª to grow,ª° and in the morningª shalt thou make thy seedª to flourish:ª° [but] the harvestª [shall be] a heapª in the dayª of griefª° and of desperateª° sorrow.ª" {Isa 17:10-11} + "Will a manª robª° God?ª Yet¹ ye¹ have robbedª° me. But ye say,ª° Wherein¹ have we robbedª° thee? In tithesª and offerings.ª ... And I will rebukeª° the devourerª° for your sakes, and he shall not¹ destroyª°¹ the fruitsª of your ground;ª neither¹ shall your vineª cast her fruit²° before the time¹ in the field,ª saithª° the LORDª of hosts.ª" {Mal 3:8-11}
blow upon it:
or, blow it away, "And the channelsª of the seaª appeared,ª° the foundationsª of the worldª were discovered,ª° at the rebukingª of the LORD,ª at the blastª¹ of the breathª of his nostrils.ª" {2Sm 22:16} + "Behold,¹ I will sendª° a blastª upon him, and he shall hearª° a rumour,ª and shall returnª° to his own land;ª and I will cause him to fallª° by the swordª in his own land.ª" {2Kg 19:7} + "The grassª withereth,ª° the flowerª fadeth:ª° because¹ the spiritª of the LORDª blowethª° upon it: surelyª the peopleª [is] grass.ª" {Isa 40:7} + "If¹ ye will not¹ hear,ª° and if¹ ye will not¹ layª° [it] to¹ heart,ª to giveª° gloryª unto my name,ª saithª° the LORDª of hosts,ª I will even sendª°¹ a curseª upon you, and I will curseª°¹ your blessings:ª yea,¹ I have cursedª° them already, because¹ ye do not¹ layª° [it] to¹ heart.ª" {Mal 2:2}
Why:
"I will sayª° unto¹ God,ª Do not¹ condemnª° me; shewª° me wherefore¹¹ thou contendestª° with me." {Job 10:2} + "I have consideredª° the daysª of old,ª¹ the yearsª of ancient times.ª ... And I said,ª° This¹ [is] my infirmity:ª° [but I will remember] the yearsª of the right handª of the most High.ª" {Psa 77:5-10}
Because:
"[Is it] timeª for you, O ye,¹ to dwellª° in your cieledª° houses,ª and this¹ houseª [lie] waste?ª" {Hgg 1:4} + "And the LORDª saidª° unto¹ Joshua,ª Get thee up;ª° wherefore¹ liestª° thou¹ thus¹ upon¹ thy face?ª ... And it shall be,¹ [that] he that is takenª° with the accursed thingª shall be burntª° with fire,ª he and all¹ that¹ he hath: because¹ he hath transgressedª°¹ the covenantª of the LORD,ª and because¹ he hath wroughtª° follyª in Israel.ª" {Jsh 7:10-15} + "Then there was¹ a famineª in the daysª of Davidª threeª years,ª yearª afterª year;ª and Davidª enquiredª°¹ of² the LORD.ª And the LORDª answered,ª° [It is] for¹ Saul,ª and for¹ [his] bloodyª house,ª because¹¹ he slewª°¹ the Gibeonites.ª" {2Sm 21:1} + "He that lovethª° fatherª orª motherª more¹ than² meª isª° notª worthyª of me:ª andª he that lovethª° sonª orª daughterª more¹ than² meª isª° notª worthyª of me.ª ... Andª heª that takethª° notª his²¹ cross,ª andª followethª° afterª me,ª isª° notª worthyª of me.ª" {Mtt 10:37-38} + "For²° this² causeª¹ manyª [are] weakª andª sicklyª amongª you,ª andª manyª sleep.ª° ... Butª when we are judged,ª° we are chastenedª° ofª the Lord,ª that²°¹ we should²° not²¹ be condemnedª° withª the¹ world.ª" {1Co 11:30-32} + "Neverthelessª I haveª° [somewhat] againstª thee,ª becauseª thou hast leftª° thyª firstª love.ª" {Rev 2:4} + "As many asªª I¹ love,ª° I² rebukeª° andª chasten:ª° be zealousª° therefore,ª andª repent.ª°" {Rev 3:19}
