{Nahum 3:18} Thy shepherds 7462 z8802 slumber, 5123 z8804 O king 4428 of Assyria: 804 thy nobles 117 shall dwell 7931 z8799 [in the dust]: thy people 5971 is scattered 6335 z8738 upon x5921 the mountains, 2022 and no man x369 gathereth 6908 z8764 [them].
Thy shepherds:
That is, the rulers and tributary princes, who, as Herodotus informs us, deserted Nineveh in the day of her distress, and came not to her succour. Diodorus also says, that when the enemy shut up the king in the city, many nations revolted; each going over to the besiegers for the sake of their liberty; that the king despatched messengers to all his subjects, requiring power from them to succour him, and that he thought himself able to endure the siege, and remained in expectation of armies which were to be raised throughout his empire, relying on the oracle, that the city would not be taken till the river became its enemy. "The gatesª of the riversª shall be opened,ª° and the palaceª shall be dissolved.ª°" {Nah 2:6} + "Fearª and dreadª shall fallª° upon¹ them; by the greatnessª of thine armª they shall be [as] stillª° as a stone;ª till¹ thy peopleª pass over,ª° O LORD,ª till¹ the peopleª pass over,ª° [which]ª thou hast purchased.ª°" {Exd 15:16} + "The stoutheartedªª are spoiled,ª° they have sleptª° their sleep:ª and none¹¹ of the men²¹ of mightª have foundª° their hands.ª ... At thy rebuke,ª¹ O Godª of Jacob,ª both the chariotª and horseª are cast into a dead sleep.ª°" {Psa 76:5-6} + "All¹ ye beastsª of the field,ª comeª° to devour,ª° [yea], all¹ ye beastsª in the forest.ª ... His watchmenª° [are] blind:ª they are all¹ ignorant,ª°¹ they [are] all¹ dumbª dogs,ª they cannotª°¹ bark;ª° sleeping,ª° lying down,ª° lovingª° to slumber.ª°" {Isa 56:9-10} + "In their heatª I will makeª°¹ their feasts,ª and I will make them drunken,ª° that¹ they may rejoice,ª° and sleepª° a perpetualª sleep,ª and not¹ wake,ª° saithª° the LORD.ª" {Jer 51:39} + "And I will make drunkª° her princes,ª and her wiseª [men], her captains,ª and her rulers,ª and her mighty men:ª and they shall sleepª° a perpetualª sleep,ª and not¹ wake,ª° saithª° the King,ª whose nameª [is] the LORDª of hosts.ª" {Jer 51:57}
O King:
"Therefore¹ thus¹ saithª° the LORDª of hosts,ª the Godª of Israel;ª Behold,¹ I will punishª°¹ the kingª of Babylonª and his land,ª as¹ I have punishedª°¹ the kingª of Assyria.ª" {Jer 50:18} + "Behold,¹ the Assyrianª [was] a cedarª in Lebanonª with fairª branches,ª and with a shadowingª° shroud,ª and of an highª stature;ª and his topª was¹ among¹ the thick boughs.ª ... To¹ whom¹ art thou thus likeª°¹ in gloryª and in greatnessª among the treesª of Eden?ª yet shalt thou be brought downª° with¹ the treesª of Edenª unto¹ the nether partsª of the earth:ª thou shalt lieª° in the midstª of the uncircumcisedª with¹ [them that be] slainª by the sword.ª This¹ [is] Pharaohª and all¹ his multitude,ª saithª° the Lordª GOD.ª" {Ezk 31:3-18} + "Asshurª [is] there¹ and all¹ her company:ª his gravesª [are] aboutª him: all¹ of them slain,ª fallenª° by the sword:ª ... Whose¹ gravesª are setª° in the sidesª of the pit,ª and her companyª is¹ round aboutª her grave:ª all¹ of them slain,ª fallenª° by the sword,ª which¹ causedª° terrorª in the landª of the living.ª" {Ezk 32:22-23}
nobles:
or, valiant ones, "Come down,ª° and sitª° in¹ the dust,ª O virginª daughterª of Babylon,ª sitª° on the ground:ª [there is] no¹ throne,ª O daughterª of the Chaldeans:ª for¹ thou shalt no¹ moreª° be calledª° tenderª and delicate.ª" {Isa 47:1} + "Andª the¹ kingsª of the¹ earth,ª andª the¹ great men,ª andª the¹ rich men,ª andª the¹ chief captains,ª andª the¹ mighty men,ª andª everyª bondman,ª andª everyª free man,ª hidª° themselvesª inª the¹ densª andª inª the¹ rocksª of the¹ mountains;ª" {Rev 6:15}
thy people:
"And he said,ª° I sawª°¹ all¹ Israelª scatteredª° upon¹ the hills,ª as sheepª that¹ have not¹ a shepherd:ª° and the LORDª said,ª° These¹ have no¹ master:ª let them returnª° every manª to his houseª in peace.ª" {1Kg 22:17} + "And it shall be¹ as the chasedª° roe,ª and as a sheepª that no¹ man taketh up:ª° they shall every manª turnª° to¹ his own people,ª and fleeª° every oneª into¹ his own land.ª" {Isa 13:14}
