- A day of darkness:
- "The quantity of these insects," says a French author,"is incredible to all who have not themselves witnessed their astonishing numbers; the whole earth is covered with them for the space of several leagues. The noise they make in browsing on the trees and herbage may be heard at a great distance, and resembles that of an army in secret. Wherever their myriads spread, the verdure of the country disappears; trees and plants, stripped of their leaves and reduced to their naked boughs and stems, cause the dreary image of winter to succeed in an instant to the rich scenery of spring. When these clouds of locusts take their flight, to surmount any obstacles or to traverse more rapidly a desert soil, the heavens may literally be said to be obscured by them." "The earthª shall quakeª° beforeª them; the heavensª shall tremble:ª° the sunª and the moonª shall be dark,ª° and the starsª shall withdrawª° their shining:ª" {Jol 2:10} + "The sunª shall be turnedª° into darkness,ª and the moonª into blood,ª beforeª the greatª and the terribleª° dayª of the LORDª come.ª°" {Jol 2:31} + "Multitudes,ª multitudesª in the valleyª of decision:ª for¹ the dayª of the LORDª [is] nearª in the valleyª of decision.ª ... The sunª and the moonª shall be darkened,ª° and the starsª shall withdrawª° their shining.ª" {Jol 3:14-15} + "And the peopleª stoodª° afar off,ª¹ and Mosesª drew nearª° unto¹ the thick darknessª where¹¹ Godª [was]." {Exd 20:21} + "Cloudsª and darknessª [are] round aboutª him: righteousnessª and judgmentª [are] the habitationª of his throne.ª" {Psa 97:2} + "And in that¹ dayª they shall roarª° against¹ them like the roaringª of the sea:ª and if [one] lookª° unto the land,ª behold¹ darknessª [and] sorrow,ª and the lightª is darkenedª° in the heavensª thereof." {Isa 5:30} + "And they shall lookª° unto¹ the earth;ª and behold¹ troubleª and darkness,ª dimnessª of anguish;ª and [they shall be] drivenª° to darkness.ª" {Isa 8:22} + "Giveª° gloryª to the LORDª your God,ª before¹ he cause darkness,ª° and before¹ your feetª stumbleª° upon¹ the darkª mountains,ª and, while ye lookª° for light,ª he turnª° it into the shadow of death,ª [and] makeª°°° [it] gross darkness.ª" {Jer 13:16} + "Woeª unto you that desireª°¹ the dayª of the LORD!ª to what endª [is] it¹ for you? the dayª of the LORDª [is] darkness,ª and not¹ light.ª ... [Shall] not¹ the dayª of the LORDª [be] darkness,ª and not¹ light?ª even very dark,ª and no¹ brightnessª in it?" {Ams 5:18-20} + "The greatª dayª of the LORDª [is] near,ª [it is] near,ª and hastethª greatly,ª [even] the voiceª of the dayª of the LORD:ª the mighty manª shall cryª° there¹ bitterly.ª ... That¹ dayª [is] a dayª of wrath,ª a dayª of troubleª and distress,ª a dayª of wastenessª and desolation,ª a dayª of darknessª and gloominess,ª a dayª of cloudsª and thick darkness,ª" {Zph 1:14-15} + "Forª ye are²° notª comeª° unto the mountª that might be touched,ª° andª that burnedª° with fire,ª norª unto blackness,ª andª darkness,ª andª tempest,ª" {Hbr 12:18} + "Ragingª wavesª of the sea,ª foaming outª° their ownª shame;ª wanderingª stars,ª to whomª is reservedª° the¹ blacknessª of darknessª for² ever.ª¹" {Jde 1:13}
