2. That this world is full of wars and fightings, which result from the indulgence of the lusts of men. 3. That all the changes and revolutions of states were plainly and perfectly foreseen by the God of heaven. 4. That no word of God can fall to the ground, but what he has declared shall infallibly come to pass. For the elucidation of the historical parts of Scripture, it is advantageous to notice the writings of heathen authors. Light is thus thrown on many passages of Holy Writ, by shewing the accomplishment of the prophecies therein contained, or customs elucidated, which, in the course of years, or in our more northern latitude, would be to us inexplicable. We have therefore reason to bless God for human learning, by which many have done great service to the readers of His blessed word. "He shall fly awayª° as a dream,ª and shall not¹ be found:ª° yea, he shall be chased awayª° as a visionª of the night.ª" {Job 20:8} + "When the wicked,ª° [even] mine enemiesª and my foes,ª° cameª° upon¹ me to eat upª°¹ my flesh,ª they¹ stumbledª° and fell.ª°" {Psa 27:2} + "Yet he passed away,ª° and, lo,¹ he [was] not:¹ yea, I soughtª° him, but he could not¹ be found.ª°" {Psa 37:36} + "Let not¹ the swiftª flee away,ª° nor¹ the mighty manª escape;ª° they shall stumble,ª° and fallª° toward the northª byª¹ the riverª Euphrates.ª" {Jer 46:6} + "I will makeª° thee a terror,ª and thou [shalt be] no¹ [more]: though thou be sought for,ª° yet shalt thou neverª¹ be foundª° again,¹ saithª° the Lordª GOD.ª" {Ezk 26:21} |
