- defile:
- Heathen nations not only ate unclean beasts, which were forbidden by Jewish law, but even the clean animals that were eaten were first offered as victims to their gods, and part of the wine was poured out as a libation on their altars. Hence Atheneus calls the beasts served up at the tables of the Persian kings, ιερια, victims. Daniel was therefore resolved not to defile himself with their viands; yet he did not rudely refuse what was intended as a kindness, but mildly and modestly requested the proper officers to indulge him in this respect. "For¹ I¹ [am] the LORDª that bringeth²° you up¹¹ out of the landª¹ of Egypt,ª to be¹ your God:ª ye shall therefore be¹ holy,ª for¹ I¹ [am] holy.ª ... To make a differenceª° between¹ the uncleanª and the clean,ª and between¹ the beastª that may be eatenª° and the beastª that¹ may not¹ be eaten.ª°" {Lev 11:45-47} + "Which¹ did eatª° the fatª of their sacrifices,ª [and] drankª° the wineª of their drink offerings?ª let them rise upª° and helpª° you, [and] be¹¹ your protection.ª" {Deu 32:38} + "They joined²° themselves¹ also unto Baalpeor,ª and ateª° the sacrificesª of the dead.ª°" {Psa 106:28} + "Inclineª° not¹ my heartª to [any] evilª thing,ª to practiseª° wickedª worksª with¹ menª that workª° iniquity:ª and let me not¹ eatª° of their dainties.ª" {Psa 141:4} + "And the LORDª said,ª° Even thus¹ shall the childrenª of Israelª eatª° their defiledª¹ breadª among the Gentiles,ª whither¹¹ I will driveª° them. ... Then saidª° I, Ahª Lordª GOD!ª behold,¹ my soulª hath not¹ been polluted:ª° for from my youthª¹ up even till¹ now¹ have I not¹ eatenª° of that which dieth of itself,ª or is torn in pieces;ª neither¹ cameª° there abominableª fleshª into my mouth.ª" {Ezk 4:13-14} + "They shall not¹ dwellª° in the LORD'Sª land;ª but Ephraimª shall returnª° to Egypt,ª and they shall eatª° uncleanª [things] in Assyria.ª ... They shall not¹ offerª° wineª [offerings] to the LORD,ª neither¹ shall they be pleasingª° unto him: their sacrificesª [shall be] unto them as the breadª of mourners;ª all¹ that eatª° thereof shall be polluted:ª° for¹ their breadª for their soulª shall not¹ come²° into¹ the houseª of the LORD.ª" {Hsa 9:3-4} + "Butª Peterª said,ª° Not so,ª Lord;ª forª I have²° never²¹ eatenª° any thingª that is commonª orª unclean.ª ...ª Thisª was¹ done²°¹ thrice:ª² andª the¹ vesselª was received upª° againª intoª heaven.ª" {Act 10:14-16} + "Butª ifª thyª brotherª be grievedª° withª [thy] meat,ª now²° walkest thou²° notª¹ charitably.ªª Destroyª° notª himª with thyª meat,ª forª whomª Christª died.ª° ... Forª the¹ kingdomª of Godª isª° notª meatª andª drink;ª butª righteousness,ª andª peace,ª andª joyª inª the Holyª Ghost.ª" {Rom 14:15-17} + "Howbeitª [there is] notª inª every manª that knowledge:ª forª someª with conscienceª of the¹ idolª untoª this hourª eatª° [it] asª a thing offered unto an idol;ª andª their²¹ conscience²¹ beingª° weakª is defiled.ª° ... Forª ifª any manª seeª° theeª which² hastª° knowledgeª sit at meatª° inª the idol's temple,ª shall²° notª the¹ conscienceª of himª which isª° weakª be emboldenedª°² to eatª° those things which are offered to idols;ª" {1Co 8:7-10} + "Beholdª° Israelª afterª the flesh:ª areª° notª they²° which eatª° of the¹ sacrificesª partakersª of the¹ altar?ª ... Ye cannotªª° drinkª° the cupª of the Lord,ª andª the cupª of devils:ª ye cannotªª° be partakersª° of the Lord'sª table,ª andª of the tableª of devils.ª" {1Co 10:18-21} + "Butª ifª any manª sayª° unto you,ª Thisª isª° offered in sacrifice unto idols,ª eatª° notª for² his sakeª¹ that shewed¹ it,²° andª for conscience¹ sake:² forª the¹ earthª [is] the¹ Lord's,ª andª the¹ fulnessª thereof:²¹ ... Whetherª thereforeª ye eat,ª° orª drink,ª° orª whatsoeverª ye do,ª° doª° allª to² the¹ gloryª of God.ª" {1Co 10:28-31}
