the prince:
It is probable that the prince mentioned here and elsewhere, does not mean the Messiah, but the ruler of the Jewish nation for the time being. For it is not only directed where he should sit in the temple, and eat his portion of the sacrifices, and when and how he should go out; but it is also ordered ("And upon that¹ dayª shall the princeª prepareª ° for¹ himself and for¹ all¹ the peopleª of the landª a bullockª [for] a sin offering.ª" {Ezk 45:22}), that at the passover he shall offer a bullock, a sin offering for himself and the people; and to guard him against any temptation of oppressing the people, he had a provision of land allotted to him ("In the landª shall be¹ his possessionª in Israel:ª and my princesª shall no¹ more¹ oppressª °¹ my people;ª and [the rest of] the landª shall they giveª ° to the houseª of Israelª according to their tribes.ª" {Ezk 45:8}), out of which he is to give an inheritance for his sons ("Moreover the princeª shall not¹ take² ° of the people's² inheritance² by oppression,² °¹ ¹ ¹ ¹ to thrust² ° them out¹ of their possession;ª ¹ [but] he shall give¹ his sonsª inheritanceª ° out of his own possession:ª ¹ that¹ ¹ my peopleª be not¹ scatteredª ° every manª from his possession.ª ¹" {Ezk 46:18}). These appear plainly to be political rules for common princes, and for a succession of them; but as no such rules were observed under the second temple, the fulfilment of it must still be future. "And I¹ the LORDª will be¹ their God,ª and my servantª Davidª a princeª amongª them; I¹ the LORDª have spokenª ° [it]." {Ezk 34:24} + "And they shall dwellª ° in¹ the landª that¹ I have givenª ° unto Jacobª my servant,ª wherein¹ your fathersª have dwelt;ª ° and they shall dwellª ° therein,¹ [even] they,¹ and their children,ª and their children'sª childrenª for ever:ª and my servantª Davidª [shall be] their princeª for² ever.ª" {Ezk 37:25} + "And speakª ° unto¹ him, saying,ª ° Thus¹ speakethª ° the LORDª of hosts,ª saying,ª ° Behold¹ the manª whose nameª [is] The BRANCH;ª and he shall grow upª ° out of his place,¹ ¹ and he shall buildª °¹ the templeª of the LORD:ª ...
