- Zidon:
- Tyre was a colony of the Zidonians (See note on "And he said,ª° Thou shalt no¹ more²°¹ rejoice,ª° O thou oppressedª° virgin,ª daughterª of Zidon:ª arise,ª° pass overª° to Chittim;ª there¹ also¹ shalt thou have no rest.ª°¹" {Isa 23:12}); and consequently Zidon was a more ancient, though a less considerable city than Tyre; and it is probable that it was taken by the Chaldeans soon after the destruction of the latter. It was afterwards burnt to the ground by the inhabitants, to prevent it falling in the hands of Ochus. "The inhabitantsª° of Zidonª and Arvadª were¹ thy mariners:ª° thy wiseª [men], O Tyrus,ª [that] were¹ in thee, were thy pilots.ª" {Ezk 27:8} + "There¹ [be] the princesª of the north,ª all¹ of them, and all¹ the Zidonians,ª which¹ are gone downª° with¹ the slain;ª with their terrorª they are ashamedª° of their might;ª¹ and they lieª° uncircumcisedª with¹ [them that be] slainª by the sword,ª and bearª° their shameª with¹ them that go downª° to the pit.ª" {Ezk 32:30} + "And Canaanª begatª°¹ Sidonª his firstborn,ª and Heth,ª" {Gen 10:15}, Sidon, "Be still,ª° ye inhabitantsª° of the isle;ª thou whom the merchantsª° of Zidon,ª that pass overª° the sea,ª have replenished.ª° ...
