- This seems to be an account of an idolatrous festival, perhaps that of Bacchus; in which a riotous and drunken multitude assembled, adorned with bracelets and chaplets, accompanied with music, songs, and dances. "And they rose up earlyª° on the morrow,ª¹ and offeredª° burnt offerings,ª and broughtª° peace offerings;ª and the peopleª sat²° down¹ to eatª° and to drink,ª° and rose upª° to play.ª°" {Exd 32:6} + "And he said,ª° [It is] not¹ the voiceª of [them that] shoutª° for mastery,ª neither¹ [is it] the voiceª of [them that] cryª° for being overcome:ª [but] the noiseª of [them that] singª° do I¹ hear.ª° ... And it came to pass,¹ as soon as¹ he came nighª° unto¹ the camp,ª that he sawª°¹ the calf,ª and the dancing:ª and Moses'ª angerª waxed hot,ª° and he castª°¹ the tablesª out of his hands,ª¹ and brakeª° them beneathª the mount.ª" {Exd 32:18-19} + "According to their pasture,ª so were they filled;ª° they were filled,ª° and their heartª was exalted;ª° therefore¹¹ have they forgottenª° me." {Hsa 13:6} + "Woeª to them [that are] at easeª in Zion,ª and trustª° in the mountainª of Samaria,ª [which are] namedª° chiefª of the nations,ª to whom the houseª of Israelª came!ª° ... That drinkª° wineª in bowls,ª and anointª° themselves with the chiefª ointments:ª but they are not¹ grievedª° for¹ the afflictionª of Joseph.ª" {Ams 6:1-6}
