- prophets:
- The prophets employed all their ingenuity to varnish over the crimes of the princes (the antecedent to them), to palliate their offences, and to conceal their faults, while they were like ravening wolves, and took bribes to shed innocent blood. By these means they shared the dishonest gains with the princes, or availed themselves of their authority to gratify their avarice or revenge. "[There is] a conspiracyª of her prophetsª in the midstª thereof, like a roaringª° lionª raveningª° the prey;ª they have devouredª° souls;ª they have takenª° the treasureª and precious things;ª they have made her manyª° widowsª in the midstª thereof." {Ezk 22:25} + "Because,¹ even because¹ they have seducedª°¹ my people,ª saying,ª° Peace;ª and [there was] no¹ peace;ª and one¹ built upª° a wall,ª and, lo,ª others daubedª° it with untemperedª [morter]: ... [To wit], the prophetsª of Israelª which prophesyª° concerning¹ Jerusalem,ª and which see²¹ visionsª of peaceª for her, and [there is] no¹ peace,ª saithª° the Lordª GOD.ª" {Ezk 13:10-16} + "Which¹ sayª° to the seers,ª° Seeª° not;¹ and to the prophets,ª Prophesyª° not¹ unto us right things,ª speakª° unto us smooth things,ª prophesyª° deceits:ª" {Isa 30:10} + "Therefore¹ will I giveª°¹ their wivesª unto others,ª [and] their fieldsª to them that shall inheritª° [them]: for¹ every one¹ from the leastª¹ even unto¹ the greatestª is given²° to covetousness,ª¹ from the prophetª¹ even unto¹ the priestª every one¹ dealethª° falsely.ª ... For they have healedª°¹ the hurtª of the daughterª of my peopleª slightly,ª° saying,ª° Peace,ª peace;ª when [there is] no¹ peace.ª" {Jer 8:10-11}
