- Doth:
- Is it not his usual custom to deal in enigmas? His figures are not to be understood; we should not trouble ourselves with them. God therefore commands the prophet to declare, in the next chapter, the same things in the plainest terms, so that they should not complain of his parables. "Thereforeªª speak¹ I²° to themª inª parables:ª becauseª they seeingª° seeª° not;ª andª hearingª° they hearª° not,ª neitherª do they understand.ª° ... Andª inª themª is fulfilledª° the¹ prophecyª of Esaias,ª which² saith,ª° By hearingª ye shall hear,ª° andª shall²° notª understand;ª° andª seeingª° ye shall see,ª° andª shall²° notª perceive:ª°" {Mtt 13:13-14} + "These thingsª have I spokenª° unto youª inª proverbs:ª butª the timeª cometh,ª° whenª I shall²° no¹ more²¹ speakª° unto youª inª proverbs,ª butª I shall shewª° youª plainlyª ofª the¹ Father.ª" {Jhn 16:25} + "Thenª certainª philosophersª of the¹ Epicureans,ª andª of the¹ Stoicks,²¹ encounteredª° him.ª Andª someª said,ª° Whatª willªª° thisª babblerª say?ªª° other¹ some, He seemethª° to beª° a setter forthª of strangeª gods:ª becauseª he preachedª° unto themª Jesus,ª andª the¹ resurrection.ª" {Act 17:18}
