- What:
- The vine is only noble and useful while producing fruit: for, when cut down, its wood is fit only for fuel. So Israel, having ceased to be fruitful, they are good for nothing, but, like a withered branch of a vine, to be burnt. "For¹ their vineª [is] of the vineª¹ of Sodom,ª and of the fieldsª¹ of Gomorrah:ª their grapesª [are] grapesª of gall,ª their clustersª [are] bitter:ª ... Their wineª [is] the poisonª of dragons,ª and the cruelª venomª of asps.ª" {Deu 32:32-33} + "Thou hast broughtª° a vineª out of Egypt:ª¹ thou hast cast outª° the heathen,ª and plantedª° it. ... [It is] burnedª° with fire,ª [it is] cut down:ª° they perishª° at the rebukeª¹ of thy countenance.ª" {Psa 80:8-16} + "The fig treeª putteth forthª° her green figs,ª and the vinesª [with] the tender grapeª giveª° a [good] smell.ª Arise,ª° my love,ª my fair one,ª and come away.²°¹" {Sgs 2:13} + "Takeª° us the foxes,ª the littleª foxes,ª that spoilª° the vines:ª for our vinesª [have] tender grapes.ª" {Sgs 2:15} + "I went downª° into¹ the gardenª of nutsª to seeª° the fruitsª of the valley,ª [and] to seeª° whether the vineª flourished,ª° [and] the pomegranatesª budded.ª°" {Sgs 6:11} + "Let us get up earlyª° to the vineyards;ª let us seeª° if¹ the vineª flourish,ª° [whether] the tender grapeª appear,²°¹ [and] the pomegranatesª bud forth:ª° there¹ will I giveª° thee¹ my loves.ª" {Sgs 7:12} + "Solomonª had¹ a vineyardª at Baalhamon;ª he let outª°¹ the vineyardª unto keepers;ª° every oneª for the fruitª thereof was to bringª° a thousandª [pieces] of silver.ª ... My vineyard,ª which [is] mine,¹ [is] beforeª me: thou, O Solomon,ª [must have] a thousand,ª and those that keepª°¹ the fruitª thereof two hundred.ª" {Sgs 8:11-12} + "Now¹ will I singª° to my wellbelovedª a songª of my belovedª touching his vineyard.ª My wellbelovedª hath¹ a vineyardª in a very fruitful²² hill:ª¹¹ ... For¹ the vineyardª of the LORDª of hostsª [is] the houseª of Israel,ª and the menª of Judahª his pleasantª plant:ª and he lookedª° for judgment,ª but behold¹ oppression;ª for righteousness,ª but behold¹ a cry.ª" {Isa 5:1-7} + "Yet I¹ had plantedª° thee a noble vine,ª wholly¹ a rightª seed:ª how¹ then art thou turnedª° into the degenerate¹ plant² of a strangeª vineª unto me?" {Jer 2:21} + "Israelª [is] an emptyª° vine,ª he bringeth forthª° fruitª unto himself: according to the multitudeª of his fruitª he hath increasedª° the altars;ª according to the goodnessª of his landª they have made goodly²°¹ images.ª" {Hsa 10:1} + "Hearª° anotherª parable:ª There wasª° a certainª² householder,ª whichª plantedª° a vineyard,ª andª hedged² it² round about,ª°¹¹ andª diggedª° a winepressª inª it,ª andª builtª° a tower,ª andª let²° it² outª°¹ to husbandmen,ª andª went into a far country:ª° ... They sayª° unto him,ª He will miserablyª destroyª° thoseª wicked men,ª andª will let outª° [his] vineyardª unto otherª husbandmen,ª whichª shall renderª° himª the¹ fruitsª inª theirª seasons.ª" {Mtt 21:33-41} + "Andª he beganª° to speakª° unto themª byª parables.ª A [certain] manª plantedª° a vineyard,ª andª set²° an hedge aboutª¹ [it], andª diggedª° [a place for] the winefat,ª andª builtª° a tower,ª andª let²° it² outª°¹ to husbandmen,ª andª went into a far country.ª° ... Whatª shall²° thereforeª the¹ lordª of the¹ vineyardª do?ª° he will comeª° andª destroyª° the¹ husbandmen,ª andª will giveª° the¹ vineyardª unto others.ª" {Mrk 12:1-9} + "Thenª began¹ he²° to speakª° toª the¹ peopleª thisª parable;ª A certainª manª plantedª° a vineyard,ª andª let²° it² forthª°¹ to husbandmen,ª andª went into a far countryª° for a longª time.ª ... He shall comeª° andª destroyª° theseª husbandmen,ª andª shall giveª° the¹ vineyardª to others.² Andª¹ when they heardª° [it], they said,ª° God forbid.ªª°" {Lke 20:9-16} + "Iª amª° the¹ trueª vine,ª andª myª Fatherª isª° the¹ husbandman.ª ... If²° a man² abide²° notª¹¹ inª me,ª he is castª° forthª asª a branch,ª andª is withered;ª° andª men gatherª° them,ª andª castª° [them] intoª the fire,ª andª they are burned.ª°" {Jhn 15:1-6}
