- This was to intimate, that though he escaped out of the city, the Chaldeans should overtake him, and carry him to Babylon. Jeremiah had predicted that his "eyes should see the eyes of the king of Babylon," and here Ezekiel foretold that he should not see Babylon, though he should die there; and Josephus says that he thought the two prophecies so inconsistent with each other, that he believed neither; yet both were exactly fulfilled, and the enigma of Ezekiel explained, when Zedekiah was brought to Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah, where he had his eyes put out, and was then carried to Babylon, and there died. "[As] I¹ live,ª saithª° the Lordª GOD,ª surely¹¹ in the placeª [where] the kingª [dwelleth] that made him king,ª°¹ whose¹¹ oathª he despised,ª° and whose¹¹ covenantª he brake,ª° [even] with¹ him in the midstª of Babylonª he shall die.ª°" {Ezk 17:16} + "And I will spreadª° my netª upon¹ him, and he shall be takenª° in my snare,ª and I will bringª° him to Babylon,ª and will pleadª° with¹ him there¹ for his trespassª° that¹ he hath trespassed²¹ against me." {Ezk 17:20} + "Then the nationsª setª° against¹ him on every sideª from the provinces,ª¹ and spreadª° their netª over¹ him: he was takenª° in their pit.ª ... And they putª° him in wardª in chains,ª and broughtª° him to¹ the kingª of Babylon:ª they broughtª° him into holds,²¹ that¹ his voiceª should no¹ more¹ be heardª° upon¹ the mountainsª of Israel.ª" {Ezk 19:8-9} + "Thus¹ saithª° the Lordª GOD;ª I will therefore spread outª°¹ my netª over¹ thee with a companyª of manyª people;ª and they shall bring thee upª° in my net.ª" {Ezk 32:3} + "Knowª° nowª that¹ Godª hath overthrownª° me, and hath compassedª°¹ me with his net.²¹" {Job 19:6} + "Upon¹ the wickedª he shall rainª° snares,ª fireª and brimstone,ª and an horribleª tempest:ª [this shall be] the portionª of their cup.ª" {Psa 11:6} + "Fear,ª and the pit,ª and the snare,ª [are] upon¹ thee, O inhabitantª° of the earth.ª ... And it shall come to pass,¹ [that] he who fleethª° from the noiseª¹ of the fearª shall fallª° into¹ the pit;ª and he that cometh upª° out of the midstª¹ of the pitª shall be takenª° in the snare:ª for¹ the windowsª from on highª¹ are open,ª° and the foundationsª of the earthª do shake.ª°" {Isa 24:17-18} + "I have laid a snareª° for thee, and thou art also¹ taken,ª° O Babylon,ª and thou¹ wast not¹ aware:ª° thou art found,ª° and also¹ caught,ª° because¹ thou hast strivenª° against the LORD.ª" {Jer 50:24} + "From aboveª¹ hath he sentª° fireª into my bones,ª and it prevaileth²° against¹ them: he hath spreadª° a netª for my feet,ª he hath turnedª° me back:ª he hath madeª° me desolateª° [and] faintª all¹ the day.ª" {Lam 1:13} + "Fearª and a snareª is come¹ upon us, desolationª and destruction.ª" {Lam 3:47} + "Our persecutorsª° are¹ swifterª than the eaglesª¹ of the heaven:ª they pursuedª° us upon¹ the mountains,ª they laid waitª° for us in the wilderness.ª ... The breathª of our nostrils,ª the anointedª of the LORD,ª was takenª° in their pits,ª of whom¹ we said,ª° Under his shadowª we shall liveª° among the heathen.ª" {Lam 4:19-20} + "When¹ they shall go,²°¹ I will spreadª° my netª upon¹ them; I will bring them downª° as the fowlsª of the heaven;ª I will chastiseª° them, as their congregationª hath heard.ª" {Hsa 7:12} + "Forª asª a snareª shall it comeª° onª allª them that dwellª° onª the faceª of the¹ wholeª earth.ª" {Lke 21:35}
