"Thus¹ saithª° the LORDª of hosts,ª the Godª of Israel,ª saying;ª° Ye¹ and your wivesª have both spokenª° with your mouths,ª and fulfilledª° with your hand,ª saying,ª° We will surely²° performª°¹ our vowsª that¹ we have vowed,ª° to burn incenseª° to the queenª of heaven,ª and to pour outª° drink offeringsª unto her: ye will surely²° accomplishª°¹ your vows,ª and surely²° performª°¹ your vows.ª" {Jer 44:25} + "If¹ a manª vowª° a vowª unto the LORD,ª or¹ swearª° an oathª to bindª°¹ his soulª with a bond;ª he shall not¹ breakª° his word,ª he shall doª° according to all¹ that proceedeth²° out¹ of his mouth.ª¹" {Num 30:2} + "But if¹ her husbandª hath utterly²° made them voidª°¹ on the dayª he heardª° [them; then] whatsoever¹ proceeded² out¹ of her lipsª concerning her vows,ª or concerning the bondª of her soul,ª shall not¹ stand:ª° her husbandª hath made them void;ª° and the LORDª shall forgiveª° her." {Num 30:12} + "That which is gone outª of thy lipsª thou shalt keepª° and perform;ª° [even] a freewill offering,ª according as¹ thou hast vowedª° unto the LORDª thy God,ª which¹ thou hast promisedª° with thy mouth.ª" {Deu 23:23} + "And she saidª° unto¹ him, My father,ª [if] thou hast openedª°¹ thy mouthª unto¹ the LORD,ª doª° to me according to that whichª hath proceeded²° out¹ of thy mouth;ª¹ forasmuchª¹ as the LORDª hath takenª° vengeanceª for thee of thine enemies,ª°¹ [even] of the childrenª¹ of Ammon.ª" {Jdg 11:36} + "Who¹ have said,ª° With our tongueª will we prevail;ª° our lipsª [are] our own: who¹ [is] lordª over us?" {Psa 12:4} + "Andª the¹ kingª wasª° exceeding sorry;ª [yet] for² his oath's sake,ª¹ andª for their sakes which² sat with¹ him,²° he wouldª° notª rejectª° her.ª" {Mrk 6:26}
queen of heaven:
or, frame of heaven. As the Sun was worshipped, not only under the name of baal shamayim "Lord of heaven," but also by that of Molech or King; it is likely also that the Moon was adored as melecheth hashshamayim "the Queen of heaven." So the Orphic hymn addressed to the Moon begins Κλυθι θεα ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΑ, "Hear, goddess Queen." And Homer, in his Hymn to the Moon, addresses her, Χαιρε, ανασσα, θεα "All hail, Queen, goddess." In Epiphanius, we find some women of Arabia, towards the end of the fourth century, had set up another queen of heaven, the Virgin Mary, too well known since under that name and character, whom they likewise worshipped as a goddess, by holding stated assemblies every year to her honour, and by offering a cake of bread in her name; whence these heretics were called Collyridians, from the Greek κολλυρις, a cake. "The childrenª gatherª° wood,ª and the fathersª kindleª°¹ the fire,ª and the womenª kneadª° [their] dough,ª to makeª° cakesª to the queenª of heaven,ª and to pour outª° drink offeringsª unto otherª gods,ª that¹ they may provoke me to anger.ª°" {Jer 7:18} + "And they leftª°¹ all¹ the commandmentsª of the LORDª their God,ª and madeª° them molten images,ª [even] twoª calves,ª and madeª° a grove,ª and worshippedª° all¹ the hostª of heaven,ª and servedª°¹ Baal.ª" {2Kg 17:16}
as we:
"And the housesª of Jerusalem,ª and the housesª of the kingsª of Judah,ª shall be¹ defiledª as the placeª of Tophet,ª because of all¹ the housesª upon¹ whose¹ roofsª they have burned incenseª° unto all¹ the hostª of heaven,ª and have poured outª° drink offeringsª unto otherª gods.ª" {Jer 19:13} + "And the Chaldeans,ª that fightª° against¹ this¹ city,ª shall comeª° and setª° fireª on¹ this¹ city,ª and burnª° it with the houses,ª upon¹ whose¹ roofsª they have offered incenseª° unto Baal,ª and poured outª° drink offeringsª unto otherª gods,ª to¹ provoke me to anger.ª° ... Because¹ of all¹ the evilª of the childrenª of Israelª and of the childrenª of Judah,ª which¹ they have doneª° to provoke me to anger,ª° they,¹ their kings,ª their princes,ª their priests,ª and their prophets,ª and the menª of Judah,ª and the inhabitantsª° of Jerusalem.ª" {Jer 32:29-32} + "Because¹¹ they have forsakenª° me, and have burned incenseª° unto otherª gods,ª that¹ they might provoke me to angerª° with all¹ the worksª of their hands;ª therefore my wrathª shall be kindledª° against this¹ place,ª and shall not¹ be quenched.ª°" {2Kg 22:17} + "Neither have our kings,ª our princes,ª our priests,ª nor¹ our fathers,ª keptª° thy law,ª nor¹ hearkenedª° unto¹ thy commandmentsª and thy testimonies,ª wherewith¹ thou didst testifyª° against them." {Neh 9:34} + "Neither¹ have we hearkenedª° unto¹ thy servantsª the prophets,ª which¹ spakeª° in thy nameª to¹ our kings,ª our princes,ª and our fathers,ª and to¹ all¹ the peopleª of the land.ª ... O Lord,²¹ to us [belongeth] confusionª of face,ª to our kings,ª to our princes,ª and to our fathers,ª because¹ we have sinnedª° against thee." {Dan 9:6-8}
our fathers:
"Neither have our kings,ª our princes,ª our priests,ª nor¹ our fathers,ª keptª° thy law,ª nor¹ hearkenedª° unto¹ thy commandmentsª and thy testimonies,ª wherewith¹ thou didst testifyª° against them." {Neh 9:34} + "We have sinnedª° with¹ our fathers,ª we have committed iniquity,ª° we have done wickedly.ª°" {Psa 106:6} + "But they rebelledª° against me, and wouldª° not¹ hearkenª° unto¹ me: they did not¹ every manª cast awayª°¹ the abominationsª of their eyes,ª neither¹ did they forsakeª° the idolsª of Egypt:ª then I said,ª° I will pour outª° my furyª upon¹ them, to accomplishª° my angerª against them in the midstª of the landª of Egypt.ª" {Ezk 20:8} + "We have sinned,ª° and have committed iniquity,ª° and have done wickedly,ª° and have rebelled,ª° even by departingª° from thy preceptsª¹ and from thy judgments:ª¹ ... Neither¹ have we hearkenedª° unto¹ thy servantsª the prophets,ª which¹ spakeª° in thy nameª to¹ our kings,ª our princes,ª and our fathers,ª and to¹ all¹ the peopleª of the land.ª" {Dan 9:5-6} + "O Lord,²¹ to us [belongeth] confusionª of face,ª to our kings,ª to our princes,ª and to our fathers,ª because¹ we have sinnedª° against thee." {Dan 9:8} + "Forasmuch as ye knowª° thatª ye were²° notª redeemedª° with corruptible things,ª [as] silverª andª gold,ª fromª yourª vainª conversationª [received] by tradition from your fathers;ª" {1Pe 1:18}
in the cities:
"Have ye forgottenª°¹ the wickednessª of your fathers,ª and the wickednessª of the kingsª of Judah,ª and the wickednessª of their wives,ª and your own wickedness,ª and the wickednessª of your wives,ª which¹ they have committedª° in the landª of Judah,ª and in the streetsª of Jerusalem?ª" {Jer 44:9} + "¹ The incenseª that¹ ye burnedª° in the citiesª of Judah,ª and in the streetsª of Jerusalem,ª ye,¹ and your fathers,ª your kings,ª and your princes,ª and the peopleª of the land,ª did not¹ the LORDª rememberª° them, and cameª° it [not] into¹ his mind?ª" {Jer 44:21}
then:
"And the childrenª of Israelª saidª° unto¹ them, Would to Godªª° we had diedª° by the handª of the LORDª in the landª of Egypt,ª when we satª° by¹ the fleshª pots,ª [and] when we did eatª° breadª to the full;ª for¹ ye have brought us forthª°¹ into¹ this¹ wilderness,ª to killª°¹ this¹ whole¹ assemblyª with hunger.ª" {Exd 16:3} + "I have even from the beginningª¹ declaredª° [it] to thee; before¹ it came to passª° I shewedª° [it] thee: lest¹ thou shouldest say,ª° Mine idolª hath doneª° them, and my graven image,ª and my molten image,ª hath commandedª° them." {Isa 48:5} + "For¹ their motherª hath played the harlot:ª° she that conceivedª° them hath done shamefully:²°¹ for¹ she said,ª° I will go²°¹ afterª my lovers,ª° that giveª° [me] my breadª and my water,ª my woolª and my flax,ª mine oilª and my drink.ª ... Therefore¹ will I return,ª° and take awayª° my cornª in the timeª thereof, and my wineª in the seasonª thereof, and will recoverª° my woolª and my flaxª [given] to coverª°¹ her nakedness.ª" {Hsa 2:5-9} + "Whoseª endª [is] destruction,ª whoseª God²¹ [is their] belly,ª andª [whose] gloryª [is] inª theirª shame,ª who² mindª° earthly things.)ª" {Php 3:19}
