- Ye shall:
- Jonadab, a man of fervent zeal for the pure worship of God, and who lived about three hundred years before this time ("And when he was departed²°¹ thence,¹¹ he lighted²° on¹¹ Jehonadabª the sonª of Rechabª [coming] to meet²°¹ him: and he salutedª° him, and saidª° to¹ him, Isª¹ thine heartª right,ª as¹ my heartª [is] with¹ thy heart?ª And Jehonadabª answered,ª° It is.ª If it be,¹ giveª° [me]¹ thine hand.ª And he gaveª° [him] his hand;ª and he took him upª° to¹ him into¹ the chariot.ª ... And he said,ª° Come²°¹ with¹ me, and seeª° my zealª for the LORD.ª So they made him rideª° in his chariot.ª" {2Kg 10:15-16}, etc.) had probably practised these rules himself; and having trained up his children to habits of abstemiousness, he enjoined them and their posterity to adhere to them. In these regulations he seems to have had no religious, but merely a prudential view, as is intimated in the reason annexed to them "that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers." And this would be the natural consequence of observing these rules; for their temperate mode of living would very much contribute to preserve health and prolong life; and they would avoid giving umbrage, or exciting the jealousy or envy of the Jews, who might have been provoked, by their engaging and succeeding in the principal business in which they themselves were engaged, agriculture and vine-dressing to expel them their country; by which they would have been deprived of the religious advantages they enjoyed. In "And the familiesª of the scribesª° which dweltª°°° at Jabez;ª the Tirathites,ª the Shimeathites,ª [and] Suchathites.ª Theseª [are] the Kenitesª that cameª° of Hemath,²¹¹ the fatherª of the houseª of Rechab.ª" {1Ch 2:55}, they are termed scribes, which intimates that they were engaged in some kind of literary employments. "Do not¹ drinkª° wineª nor strong drink,ª thou,¹ nor thy sonsª with¹ thee, when ye goª° into¹ the tabernacleª of the congregation,ª lest¹ ye die:ª° [it shall be] a statuteª for everª throughout your generations:ª" {Lev 10:9} + "Speakª° unto¹ the childrenª of Israel,ª and sayª° unto¹ them, When¹ either manª or¹ womanª shall separateª° [themselves] to vowª° a vowª of a Nazarite,ª to separateª° [themselves] unto the LORD:ª ... All¹ the daysª of the vowª of his separationª there shall no¹ razorª comeª° upon¹ his head:ª until¹ the daysª be fulfilled,ª° in the which¹ he separatethª° [himself] unto the LORD,ª he shall be¹ holy,ª [and] shall let the locksª of the hairª of his headª grow.ª°" {Num 6:2-5} + "But he saidª° unto me, Behold,¹ thou shalt conceive,²¹ and bearª° a son;ª and now¹ drink²¹ no¹ wineª nor strong drink,²°¹ neither¹ eatª° any¹ uncleanª [thing]: for¹ the childª shall be¹ a Nazariteª to Godª from¹ the wombª to¹ the dayª of his death.ª" {Jdg 13:7} + "She may not¹ eatª° of any¹¹ [thing] that¹ comethª° of the vine,ª¹ neither¹ let her drinkª° wineª or strong drink,ª nor¹ eatª° any¹ uncleanª [thing]: all¹ that¹ I commandedª° her let her observe.ª°" {Jdg 13:14} + "Forª he shall beª° greatª in the sightª of the¹ Lord,ª andª shall drinkª° neitherª wineª norª strong drink;ª andª he shall be filledª° with the Holyª Ghost,ª evenª fromª his²¹ mother'sª womb.ª" {Lke 1:15} + "I supposeª° thereforeª that thisª isª° goodª forª the¹ presentª° distress,ª [I say], thatª [it is] goodª for a manª soª to be.ª° ... Andª they that useª° this²¹ world,ª asª notª abusingª° [it]: forª the¹ fashionª of this²¹ worldª passeth away.ª°" {1Co 7:26-31}, all, "But we have dwelt¹ in²° tents,ª and have obeyed,ª° and doneª° according to all¹ that¹ Jonadabª our fatherª commandedª° us." {Jer 35:10} + "And the boysª grew:ª° and Esauª was¹ a cunningª° hunter,ª a manª of the field;ª and Jacobª [was] a plainª man,ª dwellingª° in tents.ª" {Gen 25:27} + "Ye shall dwellª° in boothsª sevenª days;ª all¹ that are Israelitesª bornª shall dwellª° in booths:ª ... That¹ your generationsª may knowª° that¹ I made¹ the childrenª of Israelª to dwellª° in booths,ª when I brought them outª°¹ of the landª¹ of Egypt:ª I¹ [am] the LORDª your God.ª" {Lev 23:42-43} + "And they foundª° writtenª° in the lawª which¹ the LORDª had commandedª° byª Moses,ª that¹ the childrenª of Israelª should dwellª° in boothsª in the feastª of the seventhª month:ª ... So the peopleª went forth,ª° and broughtª° [them], and madeª° themselves booths,ª every oneª upon¹ the roof of his house,ª and in their courts,ª and in the courtsª of the houseª of God,ª and in the streetª of the waterª gate,ª and in the streetª of the gateª of Ephraim.ª" {Neh 8:14-16} + "By faithª he sojournedª° inª the¹ landª of promise,ª as² [in]¹ a strange country,ª dwellingª° inª tabernaclesª withª Isaacª and²¹ Jacob,ª the¹ heirs with himª of the¹ sameª promise:ª ... Theseª allª diedª° inª faith,ª notª having receivedª° the¹ promises,ª butª having seenª° themª afar off,ª andª were persuaded¹ of²° [them], andª embracedª° [them], andª confessedª° thatª they wereª° strangersª andª pilgrimsª onª the¹ earth.ª" {Hbr 11:9-13} + "Dearly beloved,ª I beseechª° [you] asª strangersª andª pilgrims,ª abstain¹ from²° fleshlyª lusts,ª whichª warª° againstª the¹ soul;ª" {1Pe 2:11}, that ye, "For¹ their richesª were¹ more² than¹ that they might dwellª°¹ together;ª and the landª wherein they were strangersª couldª° not¹ bearª° them becauseª¹ of their cattle.ª" {Gen 36:7} + "Honourª°¹ thy fatherª and thy mother:ª that¹ thy daysª may be longª° upon¹ the landª which¹ the LORDª thy Godª givethª° thee." {Exd 20:12} + "When ye were¹ but few,ª² even a few,ª and strangersª° in it." {1Ch 16:19} + "When they were¹ [but] a few menª in number;ª yea, very few,ª and strangersª° in it." {Psa 105:12} + "Honourª° thyª fatherª andª mother;ª (whichª isª° the firstª commandmentª withª promise;)ª ... Thatª it may beª° wellª with thee,ª andª thou mayestª° live longª onª the¹ earth.ª" {Eph 6:2-3}
