- Moreover:
- Blayney justly observes, that the change of speakers here requires to be carefully attended to. The prophet first, in the name of God, reproves the people, and threatens them with grievous calamities, "Moreover thou shalt sayª° unto¹ them, Thus¹ saithª° the LORD;ª Shall they fall,ª° and not¹ arise?ª° shall he turn away,ª° and not¹ return?ª° ... I will surely²° consumeª° them, saithª° the LORD:ª [there shall be] no¹ grapesª on the vine,ª nor¹ figsª on the fig tree,ª and the leafª shall fade;ª° and [the things that] I have givenª° them shall pass awayª° from them." {Jer 8:4-13}. Then, apostrophising his countrymen, he advises them to retire with him to some fortified city, "Why¹¹ do we¹ sit¹ still?²° assemble²° yourselves,¹ and let us enterª° into¹ the defencedª cities,ª and let us be silentª° there:¹ for¹ the LORDª our Godª hath put us to silence,ª° and given us waterª of gallª to drink,ª° because¹ we have sinnedª° against the LORD.ª ... The snortingª of his horsesª was heardª° from Dan:ª¹ the whole¹ landª trembledª° at the soundª¹ of the neighingª of his strong ones;ª for they are come,ª° and have devouredª° the land,ª and allª that is in it; the city,ª and those that dwellª° therein." {Jer 8:14-16}. God then threatens to bring foes against them, that are irresistible, "For,¹ behold,¹ I will sendª° serpents,ª cockatrices,ª among you, which¹ [will] not¹ [be] charmed,ª and they shall biteª° you, saithª° the LORD.ª" {Jer 8:17}. The prophet next commiserates the daughter of his people, who is heard bewailing her forlorn case; whilst the voice of God breaks in upon her complaints, and shows that all this ruin is brought upon her by her infidelities, "[When] I would comfortª myself against¹ sorrow,ª my heartª [is] faintª in¹ me. ... The harvestª is past,ª° the summerª is ended,ª° and we¹ are not¹ saved.ª°" {Jer 8:18-20}. The prophet regrets that her wounds had not been healed, and laments over her slain, "For¹ the hurtª of the daughterª of my peopleª am I hurt;ª° I am black;ª° astonishmentª hath taken holdª° on me." {Jer 8:21} + "Oh that²°¹ my headª were¹ waters,ª and mine eyesª a fountainª of tears,ª that I might weepª° dayª and nightª for¹ the slainª of the daughterª of my people!ª" {Jer 9:1}.
