- The smith:
- "The workmanª meltethª° a graven image,ª and the goldsmithª° spreadeth²° it over¹ with gold,ª and castethª° silverª chains.ª" {Isa 40:19} + "They helpedª° every oneª¹ his neighbour;ª and [every one] saidª° to his brother,ª Be of good courage.ª° ... So the carpenterª encouragedª°¹ the goldsmith,ª° [and] he that smoothethª° [with] the hammerª¹ him that smoteª° the anvil,ª saying,ª° It¹ [is] readyª for the sodering:ª and he fastenedª° it with nails,ª [that] it should not¹ be moved.ª°" {Isa 41:6-7} + "They lavishª° goldª out of the bag,ª¹ and weighª° silverª in the balance,ª [and] hireª° a goldsmith;ª° and he makethª° it a god:ª they fall down,ª° yea,¹ they worship.ª° ... They bearª° him upon¹ the shoulder,ª they carryª° him, and set¹ him in his place,²°¹ and he standeth;ª° from his placeª¹ shall he not¹ remove:ª° yea,¹ [one] shall cryª° unto¹ him, yet can he not¹ answer,ª° nor¹ saveª° him out of his trouble.ª¹" {Isa 46:6-7} + "And he receivedª° [them] at their hand,ª¹ and fashionedª° it with a graving tool,ª after he had madeª° it a moltenª calf:ª and they said,ª° These¹ [be] thy gods,ª O Israel,ª which¹ brought²° thee up¹ out of the landª¹ of Egypt.ª" {Exd 32:4} + "They have turned²° aside¹ quicklyª out of¹ the wayª which¹ I commandedª° them: they have madeª° them a moltenª calf,ª and have worshippedª° it, and have sacrificedª° thereunto, and said,ª° These¹ [be] thy gods,ª O Israel,ª which¹ have brought thee upª° out of the landª¹ of Egypt.ª" {Exd 32:8} + "For¹ the customsª of the peopleª [are] vain:ª for¹ [one] cuttethª° a treeª out of the forest,ª¹ the workª of the handsª of the workman,ª with the axe.ª ... Thusª shall ye sayª° unto them, The godsª that¹ have notª madeª° the heavensª and the earth,ª [even] they shall perishª° from the earth,ª¹ and from¹ underª theseª heavens.ª" {Jer 10:3-11}
