- "Behold,¹ their valiant onesª shall cryª° without:ª the ambassadorsª of peaceª shall weepª° bitterly.ª" {Isa 33:7} + "And it came to pass,¹ when kingª Hezekiahª heardª° [it], that he rentª°¹ his clothes,ª and covered²° himself¹ with sackcloth,ª and wentª° into the houseª of the LORD.ª ... And he sentª°¹ Eliakim,ª who¹ [was] over¹ the household,ª and Shebnaª the scribe,ª° and the eldersª of the priestsª coveredª° with sackcloth,ª unto¹ Isaiahª the prophetª the sonª of Amoz.ª" {Isa 37:1-2} + "And it came to pass,¹ when the kingª of Israelª had readª°¹ the letter,ª that he rentª° his clothes,ª and said,ª° [Am] I¹ God,ª to killª° and to make alive,ª° that¹ this¹ man² doth sendª° unto¹ me to recoverª° a manª of his leprosy?ª¹ whereforeª¹ consider,ª° I pray you,¹ and seeª° how¹ he¹ seeketh a quarrelª° against me." {2Kg 5:7} + "And when I heardª°¹ this¹ thing,ª I rentª°¹ my garmentª and my mantle,ª and plucked offª° the hairª¹ of my headª and of my beard,ª and sat downª° astonied.ª°" {Ezr 9:3} + "Thenª the¹ high priestª rentª° his²¹ clothes,ª saying,ª°² He hath spoken blasphemy;ª° whatª furtherª needª have¹ we²° of witnesses?ª behold,ª nowª ye have heardª° hisª blasphemy.ª" {Mtt 26:65}; The history of the invasion of Sennacherib, observes Bp. Lowth, and the miraculous destruction of his army, which makes the subject of so many of Isaiah's prophecies, is very properly inserted here, as affording the best light to many parts of these prophecies; and as almost necessary to introduce the prophecy in the "And it came to pass,¹ when kingª Hezekiahª heardª° [it], that he rentª°¹ his clothes,ª and covered²° himself¹ with sackcloth,ª and wentª° into the houseª of the LORD.ª" {Isa 37:1}, being the answer of God to Hezekiah's prayer, which could not be properly understood without it. Sennacherib succeeded his father Shalmaneser on the throne of Assyria, am 3290, bc 714, and reigned only about eight years.
