the spirit:
This is a prophecy of what took place in Egypt about twenty-two years after the destruction of Sennacherib's army; when, upon the death of Tirhakah (bc 688), not being able to settle about the succession, they continued for two years in a state of anarchy, confusion, and civil wars; which was followed by the tyranny of twelve princes, who, dividing the country among them, governed it for fifteen years; and at last, by the sole dominion of Psammiticus, which he held for fifty-four years. "The burdenª of Egypt.ª Behold,¹ the LORDª ridethª° upon¹ a swiftª cloud,ª and shall comeª° into Egypt:ª and the idolsª of Egyptª shall be movedª° at his presence,ª¹ and the heartª of Egyptª shall meltª° in the midstª of it." {Isa 19:1} + "Surely¹ the princesª of Zoanª [are] fools,ª the counselª of the wiseª counsellorsª° of Pharaohª is become brutish:ª° how¹ sayª° ye unto¹ Pharaoh,ª I¹ [am] the sonª of the wise,ª the sonª of ancientª kings?ª ... The princesª of Zoanª are become fools,ª° the princesª of Nophª are deceived;ª° they have also seducedª°¹ Egypt,ª [even they that are] the stayª of the tribesª thereof." {Isa 19:11-13} + "For¹ I will not¹ contendª° for ever,ª neither¹ will I be always² wroth:ª°¹ for¹ the spiritª should failª° beforeª¹ me, and the soulsª [which] I¹ have made.ª°" {Isa 57:16} + "But it came to pass¹ in the morning,ª when the wineª was gone outª° of Nabal,ª¹ and his wifeª had toldª° him¹ these¹ things,ª that his heartª diedª° withinª him, and he¹ became¹ [as] a stone.ª" {1Sm 25:37} + "He shall cut offª° the spiritª of princes:ª [he is] terribleª° to the kingsª of the earth.ª" {Psa 76:12} + "Why¹ are thy valiantª [men] swept away?ª° they stoodª° not,¹ because¹ the LORDª did driveª° them." {Jer 46:15} + "And it shall be,¹ when¹ they sayª° unto¹ thee, Wherefore¹¹ sighestª° thou?¹ that thou shalt answer,ª° For¹ the tidings;ª because¹ it cometh:ª° and every¹ heartª shall melt,ª° and all¹ handsª shall be feeble,ª° and every¹ spiritª shall faint,ª° and all¹ kneesª shall be weak²°¹ [as] water:ª behold,¹ it cometh,ª° and shall be brought to pass,ª° saithª° the Lordª GOD.ª" {Ezk 21:7} + "Can thine heartª endure,ª° or¹ can thine handsª be strong,ª° in the daysª that¹ I¹ shall dealª° with thee? I¹ the LORDª have spokenª° [it], and will doª° [it]." {Ezk 22:14}
